  • [01] Ship owner's wife dies, crewmember missing as Greek freighter sinks off Skyros

    25/02/2002 10:17:11

A woman was dead and a ship's officer was missing Monday as a Greek cargo ship sank off the coast of Skyros island shortly after issuing a distress signal, harbour authorities said.

The freighter "Philippos K", carrying a cargo of fertilizer and 10 persons on board -- a 9-member all-Greek crew and the shipowner's wife -- issued an SOS at 5:40 a.m. after the cargo shifted and the vessel developed a 40-45 degree list as it was sailing 11 nautical miles off Skyros in storm-force winds of 8 beaufort.

Nearby vessels, a Super Puma all-weather helicopter and a C-130 rushed to the distressed freighter's assistance and rescued 9 of the 10-member crew, who were reported to be in good health and were airlifted to Skyros by the Super Puma.

The shipowner's wife, Eleni Kaifa, who was also picked up by the Super Puma, died shortly afterward of reasons as yet unknown.

A search and rescue operation was in progress to locate the ship's missing first mate George Delinikolaou.

The vessel's owner, Manolis Kaifas, was among the rescued.

The Philippos K was en route from Kavala to the island of Crete.
