    The first armed robbery in Greece during 2002 was carried out shortly before 8:00 am on Wednesday at a branch of the Post Office Savings Bank in Holargos by an armed man who got away with 78,000 euros (26, 580,000 drachmas).

    An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale shook Messinia shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

    According to the Geodynamic Institute at the Athens National Observatory and the Geophysics Laboratory at Thessaloniki University the earthquake took place at 00.16 am and its epicentre was 180 kilometres southwest of Athens, just north of Meligala in Messinia.

    Equity priceswere rising at the start of first session of the Athens Stock Exchange's within 2002 on Wednesday, with buyers gravitating toward blue chip and mid-cap stock.

    The general share price index was up 0.58 percent 10 minutes into the session at 2,606.49 points, and turnover was 2.0 million euros, or 690 million drachmas.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 0.44 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index rose 0.67 percent and the FTSE/ASE SmallCap 80 index was up 0.23 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 97 were up, 23 were down and 28 were unchanged.

    [04] Weather Forecast: Snow and rain on Wednesday

    Rain and snow is forecast for most parts of the country on Wednesday, while later in the day conditions will improve. Winds northerly, moderate to gale force. In the north, temperatures will range from -12C to 1C; on the rest of the mainland from -6C to 6C; and in the islands from 4C to 9C. Rain and snow in Athens with temperatures between -1C to 5C. Cloudy in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from -8C to 1C, and snow in the higher elevations of the city.
