    Main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis on Saturday

    launched a scathing attack on the government's policies, particularly in the economy and public works, and warned the PASOK government not to make changes to the electoral law, during a two-day tour of Achaia prefecture.

    NEW YORK (ANA - M. Georgiadou) --

    The UN plenary is slated Monday to discuss a draft resolution tabled jointly by Greece and Turkey on coordinated emergency response to natural disasters, it was made known on Saturday.

    The Greek and Turkish permanent representatives to the UN, Ambassadors Elias Gounaris and Umit Pamir respectively, will introduce the draft resolution on "Strengthening of the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance of the United Nations" on Monday during the UN's 56th General Assembly.

    Inclement weather throughout Greece on Saturday obliged drivers in Northern Greece to use snow tires and caused a power blackout in Crete, while all ferry sailings were banned from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina to Chios and Mytilini islands in the Aegean, the Cyclades and Dodecanese island groupings, and Crete.

    Cloud and rain is forecast for most parts of the country on Sunday, with storms in the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese islands, although the weather will improve later in the day. Local cloud and rain is forecast in western and northern Greece, with snow in the north, and temperatures of -4 to 6 C in the north, -1 to 11 C in the rest of the mainland, and 6-14 C in the Aegean. Athens will be mostly sunny, with temperatures of 5-11 C. Thessaloniki will be overcast, with temperatures of 1-6 C.

    [06] KEP Founding Congress-Avramopoulos elected party leader

    Athens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos, founder of the new Movement of Free Citizens (KEP) party, was on Saturday elected party leader at the KEP Founding Congress in Thessaloniki.

    Avramopoulos was formally elected party leader in a show of hands by the 3,500 party members taking part in the Founding Congress.

    The Founding Congress was slated to end late Saturday with the signing of the Founding Declaration.
