    [02] Britain - Cyprus - Cook

    27/03/2001 18:58:52

LONDON (ANA) -- The long-standing Cyprus issue was the centre-piece of an event in north London recently, with both the Greek and British foreign ministers speaking at a large gathering of expatriates in the British capital.

On his part, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook referred to what he called his disappointment over the continuing division on the island republic. He also stressed that the British governments goal is a unified Cyprus, a unified country with one territorial sovereignty and citizenship, and with a system of security that offers guarantees for the human rights of all Cypriots along with unimpeded movement of citizens.

Britain is one of three guarantor powers for Cyprus -- Greece and Turkey are the other two -- while it retains two sovereign bases on the island republic.

    [05] ASE-close

    27/03/2001 16:08:25

Equity prices ended lower on the Athens Stock Exchange on Tuesday hit by investors' worries over developments in the market following a decision by ASE's board to put six stocks under surveillance and talk of more businessmen arrests on charges of alleged creation of "bubble stocks".

Traders said the Greek bourse ignored a continued recovery in European markets.

Shares in the textile sector attracted heavy demand to end sharply up in heavy trade.

The general index ended 0.80 percent lower at 3,057.89 points, off the day's lows of 3,052.13 points. Turnover was a low 147.03 million euros, or 50.1 billion drachmas.

Analysts said the fact that the index holded above the 3,050 technical support level was a good sign for the market.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavy traded stocks ended 0.69 percent off at 1,763.09 points, and the FTSE/ASE 40 index eased 0.59 percent to 368.98 points.

The parallel market index for smaller capitalisation stocks ended at 330.00 points, off 0.81 percent.
