SKOPJE (ANA - M. Vihou) Reports by CNN and the BBC regarding an military offensive against Albanian extremists in the north were denied by the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on Tuesday.

[03] Greek FM due in Skopje for talks with FYROM's government

    06/03/2001 13:01:24

Foreign Minister George Papandreou is due in Skopje on Tuesday for talks with the government of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia regarding the tide of violence that has spilled over the borders of Kosovo into FYROM's northern regions.

Papandreouwill go to FYROM directly from Vienna, where he had been on a three-day official visit, changing his plans at the last minute in response to the increasingly volatile situation in the tiny republic.

While in Skopje, he is expected to have talks with FYROM President Boris Trajkovski and FYROM Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski.

Late on Monday afternoon, Papandreou also spoke with US Secretary of State Colin Powell, to inform him about the visit to Skopje and on Athens' positions regarding the crisis in the region.

According to Greek foreign ministry sources, Powell expressed total agreement with the Greek approach, which calls for a strong message from the international community regarding FYROM's territorial integrity and the inviolability of its borders.

Government sources, meanwhile, said that Georgievski had also been in touch with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis over the phone on Monday night, asking for Athens' help in containing the tense situation that has arisen in the region.
