[01] Drugs Bust-Venezuela-US

Seven Greek shipping officials were arrested in Athens and France as part of an international operation to penetrate a cocaine smuggling ring operating through Venezuela, the finance ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

Arrested in Athens were six of the suspects, who were employees or associates of the Kalisti Maritime shipping company based in the port of Piraeus.

[02] Wildfires

A three-day fire in northwestern Greece that killed seven elderly people and ravaged land in the prefecture of Ioannina was gradually abating as winds subsided, fire brigade officials said on Saturday.

The fire, which originally spread across the border from Albania, had been contained to two fronts, at Kournorahi and Haravghi. No inhabited areas were in jeopardy, the officials said.

Eight water-dropping planes and helicopters were tackling the blaze, and a fresh contingent of firefighters had joined the ground effort, they added.

Meanwhile, funerals were held for the seven dead in the villages of Lavdani and Aghia Marina.

Sunny weather is forecast in most parts of the country on Sunday with scattered showers and storms expected in eastern Macedonia and Thrace, mainly in mountainous areas.
