A powerful earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rocked the southeastern Aegean seabed early on Tuesday and initial police reports from the region said there had been no damage or casualties.

The quake, according to the Athens Observatory, was recorded at 04.43 local time and came from a distance of 450 kilometres southeast of Athens. Its epicentre was in a depth of 60 kilometres in the seabed, about 50 kilometres from the island of Karpathos.

"Such tremors are a usual phenomenon in this specific region," said seismologist Dimitris Papanastasiou of the Athens geodynamic Institute.
