Panathinaikos Athens' clinching of the European basketball championship
for the second time in its history was marred early Friday by the
stabbing of a fan during rampaging by hooligans in the northern Greek
capital Thessaloniki, where the Euroleague 'Final Four' took place.
A Panathinaikos fan was stabbed in the stomach shortly after midnight
when a group of about 150 hooligans attacked revellers in downtown
Thessaloniki, who were celebrating Panathinaikos' victory over Maccabi
Tel Aviv in the final.
Nikolaos Spanos, 26, did not require surgery as the stab wound did not
affect vital organs. Six other fans taken to hospital with cuts and
bruises were released after receiving first aid.
