    18/01/2000 10:26:55

Wreckage was spotted Tuesday southeast of Mt. Parnassos as a massive search and rescue operation for a Hellenic Airforce jet that went missing while on a training flight entered its second day, national defence ministry sources said.

The sources said the wreckage was spotted shortly before 10:00 a.m. in the Aghiou Georgiou, Xerovouni area southeast of Mt. Parnassos after land, sea and air searches resumed, aided by clear weather.

The twin-seater F-4 fighter plane went missing Monday morning between Tanagra and Skyros island with two pilots on board. The F-4 jetfighter took off Monday morning from Andravida airbase on a training flight and was due to land at 10:00 a.m. at Skyros airport, but never reached its destination. The jet disappeared from radars as it was flying between Tanagra and Skyros.

A search by land, sea and air, but was hindered by adverse weather conditions prevailing in the area Monday.

Defence ministry sources said rescue units were rushing to the site where the wreckage was spotted to ascertain whether it belonged to the missing F-4.

Taking part in the operation were four helicopters, a personnel transport plane, an aerial photography RF4 plane, and special forces teams, the sources said.
