    Italian apprehended for student's murder

Italian national Giovanni Perosa, 56, from Trieste, has been arrested for the killing of Patras Technical College (TEI) student Irene Antoniou, 27, the body of whom was found in the Athens seaside suburb of Neo Faliron on December 5.

Perosa had escaped on June 30 from the Tyrinth agricultural prison, where he was serving an 11 year, 3-month term for narcotics, while a two-year term for burglaries was also pending.

Perosa admitted the killing to police after he was arrested in the Athens residential district of Kypseli.

He said he strangled Antoniou on December 2 and threw her body into the Kifissos River after she told him she was seeing another man. According to police, torrential rains that night raised river's water level, resulting in the body being carried all the way to the Neo Faliron outlet.

That same day, Perosa left for Patras, and after spending three days in his car, he left for Italy by boat on December 5. He returned to Greece two weeks ago, and was apprehended by police in Kypseli Square for suspicious conduct.
