[01] Karamanlis-Halki theological schoolKostas Karamanlis is calling on Greeks everywhere to do what they can to help overturn a Turkish government decision to remove the Greek members from the board of trustees of the Halki theological school. The New Democracy leader discussed the issue with the archbishop of the orthodox church in Greece. The orthodox school of Halki in Constantinople was closed by the Turks in 1971, but Ankara is under American pressure to let it reopen. The fear is that the Turks don't want any Greeks running it if it does reopen. After meeting with the archbishop of orthodox church in Greece, New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis called the Turkish removal of the Greeks from the Halki board of trustees "dangerous". Noting that it leaves Greeks with a sense of exasperation, Karamanlis warned: "Through such behaviour Turkey is making its road toward the European Union and toward winning recognition as a civilised state more difficult". Karmaanlis added that Hellenism must be mobilised around the world to get the Halki theological school in Constantinople opened again. Archbishop Christodoulos said: "All of hellenism shares the concerns of the ecumenical patriarchate in Constantinople over the Turkish authorities decision to oust the Greek members of the Halkis board of trustees". The church of Greece promises to stand by the patriarchate in its battle to secure its basic human and religious rights against the high-handed decisions of the Turkish authorities. Christodoulos believes the Greeks' ouster is part of a well-thought-out plan of attack on all the non- profit organisations run under the auspices of the patriarchate. American ambassador to Turkey Robert Parish visited the Fanari to discuss the Halki issue with ecumenical patriarch Vartholomeos. And the Greek government has protested sternly to the Turkish ambassador in Athens. [02] E.U-CyprusAs the European Union opened membership talks with Cyprus Tuesday, the Cypriot government urged the EU to push Turkey to help solve the Cyprus problem. As it began its negotiations, Cyprus stressed its commitment to finding a just and viable solution to the problem, a solution which would reunite the island. At the outset of its talks to join the European Union, Cyprus stressed that it wants to solve the Cyprus problem. Turkey has been in occupation of northern Cyprus since 1974, and ignored UN calls for it to get its troops out. Turkey and the Turkish-Cypriot leaders have also tried to get the EU to shelve its plans to admit the Cypriot Republic, despite the fact that the Cypriot government has offered to allow Turkish-Cypriot representatives to sit in on the negotiations. Turkey has even threatened to annex the occupied territory outright if the talks proceed. As the EU talks on admission formally opened, the Associated Press reported that Cypriot foreign minister Iannis Kasoulides said a just and viable solution must be found for Cyprus. He added that reunification of the island would improve relations between Greece and Turkey. Although the EU has not rescinded on its commitment to start talks with Cyprus, some EU members are unhappy with the fact that the Cyprus problem isn't being resolved. In a joint statement, France, Germany, and Holland said the ongoing issue weighs heavily against the island's chances for membership. A political solution to the problem, the added, is urgently needed. The AP reports that the three EU members fear that Cypriot membership would bring the Cyprus problem and Greek-Turkish differences over the issue into the EU. In addition to Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia have also started. [03] SportsIn soccer, Aek has made a surprise exit from the Greek cupship tournament. Aek, currently in second place in the first division standings, bowed out to unknown Poseidonas in a small stadium in Michaniona outside Thessaloniki. It may not be on the soccer map, but Poseidonas calls this field home. And home was sweet Tuesday as the club pulled off the biggest victories in its history, humbling Aek 1-nil, on a goal by Vassilis Pritas. Poseidonas's players have received a bonus of 30 thousand dollars for their triumph; Aek's players may be slapped with a fine equally as heavy. The team coach says it's time his players started acting, and playing, like the professionals they are paid to be. In first division soccer, Olymiakos has moved to within three points of front-runner Panathinaikos in the standings, and possibly into a first- place tie. Olympiakos does it by beating Ionikos Tuesday night. Ilia Ivich scores what proves to be the winning goal, tuckking one into the Ionikos net in the first half. Georgatos makes it 2-nil with a goal in injury time at the end of the match. Olympiakos gets three points for the victory and finds itself in third place. And it expects to be awarded three points for a game it won against Paok a few weeks ago, but which was interrupted by violence by the Paok fans.
