WELCOME

Greece prepared a heroes' welcome for its returning Olympic gold and silver medalists this week.

The Olympic winners arrived Tuesday afternoon in Athens, where family members, friends and thousands of fans gathered to give them a warm greeting.

The athletes were taken to central Athens in military jeeps. The procession stopped at the ancient Andrianos Gates, where Athens mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos awarded the Olympic medalists with the city's Gold Medal of Honor.

Then, on foot, the athletes arrived at the first modern Olympics stadium, Kallimarmaro. President Kostis Stefanopoulos, prime minister Kostas Simitis, Athens mayor and the president of the Olympic Games Committee held honorary speeches.

Over five hundred fireworks lit up the Athenian sky during the awarding ceremony in honour of the Olympic winners.

The splendid event ended with a lovely concert by composer Stamatis Spanoudakis.

OLYMPICS

It's been two full weeks of sports events as well as of gold and silver medals for Greece, the country where the Olympic spirit was born.

The Golden Olympics in Atlanta now belongs to history .Sidney , in Australia will be the next city will be hostiing the Olympic games in the year 2000.

Greece has won 4 gold, and 4 silver medals, and is in fifteenth place in the medal rankings, among the one-hundred and ninety-seven countries that participated in the centennial Olympics.

PARLIAMENT

Greece, all of the country's political leaders, Athens mayor,and the common people, made a heroes welcome for the returning Olympic medalists Tuesday.

On Wednesday, it was the greek parliaments turn to honour them, by a special awarding ceremony organised for Greece's eight Olympic gold and silver medalists.

THESSALONIKI

Topping Athens, northern Greece's capital Thessaloniki honoured the country's Olympic winners in a splendid welcome ceremony Wednesday night.

Thessaloniki prepared an impressive welcome for its athletes, the Olympic gold and silver medalists who come from northern Greece.

Thousands of people gathered at the White Tower square to personally greet the athletes that made the entire Greece proud in the centennial Olympics.

Melissanides, Leonides, Pikilides, Saltsides, Rentzias and many others couldn't miss the warm welcome ceremony prepared by Thessaloniki's residents.

Deeply moved, Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics, Yiannis Melissanides, said, "I am in my hometown, Thessaloniki, the capital of Macedonia. I'm home, I'm to your house, I'm to OUR house. I thank you from deep in my heart".

Thessaloniki's mayor Dinos Kosmopoulos stressed that every Greek citizen feels grateful before Greece's Olympic winners.

The athletes made a tour all over Thessaloniki, through the streets that were full of people who wanted to pay honour to the Olympic medalists.

Folklore dances were performed by northern Greek dance groups, and fireworks exploded in the sky, bringing the welcome ceremony to an end.

TURKEY

Greece's reaction was strong toward the new Turkish provocative claims that were published in the daily "Jum Hurriet" The publication was under the form of a report written by Turkish military headquarters officials.

The report questions Greece's sovereign rights to one-hundred and seven islands and rocks in the eastern Aegean.

CYPRUS

Earlier this week, we told you about European motorcycle riders who are making a symbolic rally aiming to arrive in Cyprus this Sunday, and pass through the occupied territories.

However this protest doesn't seem to be easy for the riders, as the self-styled Turkish Cypriot leader's, Rauf Denktash regime warns the "riders of peace" that he will immediatly fire at anybody who will attempt to pass through the occupied northern Cyprus.

MARRIAGE

It was a wedding that sealed a ten-month-old passionate love affair between two popular Greek artists : singer Tolis Voskopoulos and actress Angela Gkerekou were married last Friday in the bride's homeland, the island of Corfu.
