Finance Minister on tax evasion, VAT paymentFinance Ministry plans the on the same day VAT payment aiming to tackle the tax evasion, said Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgos Mavraganis in an interview on Sunday with VIMA newspaper.Mavraganis said that in the ministry's plans is the taxation of citizens alleged to have sent 'black money' abroad, the comparison of real expenditures and incomes in order to check all tax payers' real incomes and the opening of tax evaders' bank accounts as well as to locate private cars without insurance . The most optimistic intervention regarding the increase of revenues and the decrease of tax evasion is the online connection of shops' cash registers with the TAXIS system and the every day VAT payment. In another interview with Ependytis newspaper on Sunday, Mavraganis said that the citizens must proceed with the arrangement of their overdue debts "A regulation is in effect regarding the overdue debts which under conditions may be paid in the next four years" said Mavraganis adding that "it would be good for those citizens having difficulties to pay their duties to take advantage of this regime and to make an arrangement ". Viketos)Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras communicated by telephone with newly-elected President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and congratulated him on his election. Meanwhile, according to an AMNA dispatch from New York, Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos also congratulated the newly-elected Cyprus President. Avramopoulos communicated with Anastasiades from New York, congratulating him on his election and reconfirming Greece's position for close cooperation in the effort to defend the issues of Hellenism. The Foreign minister stressed that Greece will continue to stand by the side of Cyprus with all forces, and struggle for a just and viable solution to the issue of Cyprus and the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops. [03] FM Avramopoulos on three-day visit to CanadaGreek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos was due to arrive in Canada on Sunday, February 24, - following his working visit to New York and the completion of his contacts - for a three-day official visit in the framework of celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the conclusion of diplomatic relations between Greece and Canada.Avramopoulos will be having bilateral consultations with Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird (Wednesday 27/2), during which the two ministers will be discussing latest developments in Europe and efforts to handle the economic crisis, EU-Canada relations and regional developments in the region of Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Greek Foreign minister will also be meeting Senate President Noel Kinsella (Tuesday 26/2), who will host a reception in his honour at the Canadian Parliament. On the same day, Avramopoulos will attend a dinner with members of the Greek community of Ottawa. Avramopoulos will visit Toronto (Monday 25/2) and Montreal (Tuesday 26/2), Canada's two biggest cities, with a considerable expatriate presence where, apart from his contacts with expatriate representatives, he will be holding meetings with business and investments agencies in the framework of the Foreign ministry's undertaking of initiatives for the attraction of foreign investments to Greece. Lastly, in Toronto, Avramopoulos will be meeting the Metropolitan of Canada Sotirios. [04] Dep. Foreign Minister in Lisbon on MondayDeputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas will be on Monday in Lisbon to participate in a congress "for the future of the Meditereannean Europe between the crisis in the eurozone and the Arabic Spring" organised by the German Marshall Fund of USA.Kourkoulas will be among the main speakers on Tuesday in the first part of the congress entitled "the economic crisis of Europe and the Mediterreanean Europe: the economic, social and political challenges". On the sidelines of the congress, Kourkoulas will meet with his Portuguese counterpart Miguel Morais Leitao. The German Marshall Fund is a non-governmental US institute on the strengthening of the cooperation and understanding between USA and Europe. The Institute was founded in 1972 on the 25th anniversary of the Marsall Plan and has a strong presence in both sides of the Atlantic. [05] Main opposition leader calls for write-off of household debtsThe only way Europe can promote growth is to cancel the austerity policy and change the role of the European Central Bank and the European Investment Bank, Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras said on Saturday.The main opposition's leader also charged that the European Commission's forecast for the Greek economy and its revival was "as reliable as the memorandum programme that contains the infamous 'mistake' of the International Monetary Fund and has led to an accumulated reduction in the GNP of 25 pct." On the debts households face in Greece, Tsipras said that the party had tabled a bill proposing "the complete write-off of debts for citizens who have fallen below the poverty level and the reduction of monthly installment payments." [06] Indep Greeks leader calls for resistance to austerityIndependent Greeks party leader Panos Kammenos on Saturday charged the government and Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras in particular with leading the Greek people to poverty. In the second memorandum "they are talking about the end of 2014," he said, referring to forecasts of when the economy will start reviving, "the truth however is that they want us to keep going like this to 2040."Kammenos said that "We must send a message of resistance" and called on Greek citizens to react to the austerity measures, charging the coalition government with "faithfully following the dictates of a foreign junta," referring to the troika of lenders. [07] Independent Greeks party leader in CreteIndependent Greeks party leader Panos Kammenos sharply criticised the government and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in Iraklio, on the island of Crete on Sunday, while addressing an event on the country's natural resources and the exclusive economic zone in the framework of his party's dialogue ahead of its congress.In both his address and in an interview, Kammenos reiterated that for the Indepedent Greeks party there is no question of cooperation with the parties serving the memorandum. He said, however, that there are points of convergence with the pre-electoral programme of the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), "however we have red lines on the national issues". Kammenos further said that the memorandum is proceeding with the personal guarantee of the three of the coalition government, a memorandum that has only reached 50 percent, claiming that their target is for the internal devaluation, the impoverishment of the Greeks to go ahead even for a 50 percent. [08] Electoral procedures for upcoming PASOK congressPASOK party leader Evangelos Venizelos, speaking Sunday after the completion of the electoral procedure for the selection of delegates for the party's upcoming congress, said that "we are finding once again today the thread of the relation of trust with the people".Venizelos stressed that "the people of the democratic party surpassed every organising expectation, participation exceeds every previous similar procedure" and thanked "wholeheartedly" PASOK's members and friends "who with their mass participation today showed that PASOK is here, it endures, it changes, it is transforming and struggling for the country and the citizens". As regards the meaning of the participation in Sunday's elections, Venizelos said that it "swept aside the miseries and remnants of old mechanistic conceptions", adding that "the people of the democratic party declared clearly today that they support the great effort that we are making for the motherland, as well as for the party itself that exists for the sake of the motherland". According to initial reports, Vlastos has been wounded by the guards' fire.According to the reports, the helicopter was spotted by guards when it attempted to lift the electrified net, an exchange of fire followed and the helicopter was eventually pinned down in the prison's parking lot. Vlastos has been sentenced to life imprisonment twice and to 25 years in prison for his participation in the so-called "crime syndicate". [16] Falun Gong practitioners stage protest in ThessalonikiTwelve practitioners of Falun Gong in yellow exercise suits staged a sitting protest in Thessaloniki on Saturday over the persecution of fellow practitioners in China.The twelve began their protest earlier in the day, at Aristotelous Square, under the accompaniment of music. Falun Gong or Falun Dafa is a spiritual discipline introduced in China in the late 90s and involves meditation and qigong exercises. It emphasises morality and the cultivation of virtue and is said to be practised by millions in China. The protesters said that the popularity of the system troubled the government of China which began persecuting its adherents, jailing half a million, with 3,500 of these dying in jail. [17] Public Prosecutor employee arrested for drug possessionAn employee of the Athens Public Prosecutor's office was arrested by the Igoumenitsa police in northwestern Greece on Saturday on drug charges.The man was under surveillance from the time he loaded four sacks of marijuana in his car, which had government plates, at Sagiada and he was arrested at the town of Nea Selefkia. Preliminary reports estimated that the drugs weighed 150 kg. [18] Surgeon dies of smoke inhalation on CreteA surgeon at the Venizelio Hospital of Iraklio, the Cretan island capital, died of smoke inhalation at his house in Marathitis on Saturday.The 59-year-old man had put out a fire in his kitchen but could not pry open the power-operated windows and succumbed at the house. He was the chief of surgery in the hospital's emergency wing and his funeral will be held on Monday.
