  • [01] PM Karamanlis calls for more democratic and effective UN on occasion of 60th anniversary of its founding

    ATHENS, 24/10/2005 (ANA)

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary on Monday of the founding of the United Nations, in a statement on Sunday said that "the United Nations, in the 60 years of its presence in international life, conducts, through many challenges and difficulties, a unique in importance mission for the safeguarding of peace and stability in the world."

In a written statement released by the premier's press office, Karamanlis said the United Nations "was and is the guardian of international law and international legality, necessary elements for peaceful co-existence and cooperation between states and peoples."

Prime Minister Karamanlis added:" Of course, 60 years after its founding, the organization is called on to continue this most important mission of it, in conditions completely different from those prevailing when it started its action.

"Our world is faced with new challenges and new threats, such as international terrorism, poverty, humanitarian crises, the plague of narcotics and natural disasters, many of which are due to the lack of effective protection of the environment."

The Greek prime minister went on to say:" It is therefore imperative for the United Nations to proceed to those necessary reforms which will render it more effective. This procedure of reform must also include the Security Council, of which the existing composition does not reflect the present international community."

Concluding, Prime Minister Karamanlis said:" Our country, a stable and ardent supporter of the United Nations, has the opportunity, but also the will, to contribute in this effort in its capacity as non-permanent member of the Security Council, for the time period 2005-2006, as well. With all our strength, we are working for a more democratic and more effective United Nations in the modern world."

[02] SYN says U.S. stands in the way of UN implementing its objectives

    ATHENS, 24/10/2005 (ANA)

The Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) party in an announcement on Sunday on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations on Monday, said that "the 60th anniversary of the founding of the UN is not offered for celebration but for concern and vigilance."

Synaspismos said:" Today, the UN is undermined by the claim of the United States for the monopolistic direction of the world. It is harmed by the Bush government for 'preventive wars' and by its scorn of international law."

The announcement added:" The current world inequalities, which are intensified by the neo-liberal globalization under the hegemony of the United States, constitute the main obstacle of the implementation of the UN's objects."

Concluding, the Synaspismos announcement said:" The main message of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations is the claim for its democratization. The reinforcement of its capability to serve international law and to promote its founding objectives for a peaceful and just world. This interests in particular the smaller countries, such as Greece, which are often harmed by the policies of strength."

[03] Greek officials call for lifting of recent restrictions following negative tests for bird flu

    ATHENS, 24/10/2005 (ANA)

Deputy Agriculture Development Minister Alexandros Kontos has conveyed a letter the Greek foreign ministry requesting that Athens' diplomatic services emphasize to the governments of Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Bulgaria that no instances of bird flu have been detected in the country, days after a single and much-publicized suspected case tested negative for the H5N1 virus.

Kontos also called for the lifting of any restrictions on Greek poultry exports to the neighboring countries, most in place since last week.

In a related development, agriculture ministry officials informed Albanian ambassador to Athens Bashkim Zeneli on Friday that tests on poultry in the country turned up negative for bird flu, while again stressing that this fact certainly "does not justify the unilateral measures" taken by Tirana against Greek exports to neighboring Albania.

On his part, Deputy Health Minister George Constantopoulos told an audience of delegates at a pharmaceuticals exhibition in Thessaloniki that he was confident a vaccine against the specific virus will be found within the next six months.

He clarified that "what I had said and I repeat, is my opinion on the different hierarchy of issues which takes place or the disproportionate time given on each topic at certain times."

He addded:"On the occasion, I have not seen anyone reproducing and dealing with what (main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement deputy Theodoros) Mr. Pangalos described the situation as being a 'brothel'. And I did not see it because the issue was not risen under pressure by (PASOK spokesman Nikos) Mr. Athanassakis. I believe that PASOK must answer if it wants the public dialogue to be held with terms of a coffee shop. (PASOK leader George) Mr. Papandreou cannot speak on the one hand of profundity and ethics and leading cadres of his party to behave publicly in this manner and not be pressured in taking a stand ... If I had said such a phrase publicly such strong pressure would have been exerted on me with continuous questions to the press spokesman to say whether he covers up for me or not."

Asked on the primary shareholder, he said that "the best legal and technical adjustment will soon be found to restrict or eradicate all these phenomena." Papandreou further accused the ND and the government that "they are attempting to pass the view that they are all the same," adding that "in this manner, they are striking the heart of the self-confidence of the Greek people and passing the view that the Greek is incorrectable." The PASOK leader said "we will not allow this logic to pass," adding that "we proved that when we want to, we can achieve many things."

On the fact that Michalis Papayiannakis insists on his candidacy, Alavanos answered that "it is not bad and does not constitute a crisis for a party to have many good candidates."

On the possibility of cooperation with the main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in the municipal elections, Alavanos said that "this is not possible in the big municipalities, where there exists, for example, great unemployment, for which it is responsible along with the New Democracy party."
