Speaking at a memorial service, for those killed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, held within the framework of "The Cyprus Week" events in Greece, where he is paying a three-day visit, Christofias said Cyprus will not submit to black-mailing dilemmas in view of its accession to the European Union adding the people of Cyprus will not accept any drafts on a solution that would aim at combining federation and confederation.UN-led proximity talks, aiming at reaching an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem, were interrupted last year when Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, backed by Ankara, abandoned the talks, which started in December 1999, declaring them "dead" and demanding recognition of his self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus before he returns to the dialogue. Christofias said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan should work towards the implementation of human rights in Cyprus for all its people and called on the UN Security Council to deal with Turkish threats against Cyprus pointing out that the side responsible for sustaining the current deadlock in the efforts to find a solution to the problem should be held accountable for its actions. He also said the European Union should create a policy to prevent Turkey from creating crisis situations in Cyprus.
