Ms Bakoyiannis highlighted the role of the EC's programmes in a speech marking the end of a two-day seminar on "Development in Outlying Regions in the Current Balkan Conjunction", held in Florina. "Up until now Community experience has proved that both transregional and trans-border co-operation are key factors in combating inequalities and imbalances, creating authoritative and productive developmental solutions to the structural problems of economies", Ms. Bakoyiannis said. She referred to the case of the Basques in Spain and the Aquitanians in France, whose relations had never been good, but who, through Community programmes, had made joint investments worth 200 billion drachmas and created 40,000 new jobs. The seminar, organised jointly by the Florina Prefect Nikos Koukoylas, the prefecture's two parliamentary deputies and the Union of All Prespiotes, came under the auspices of the PRESPES '93 events series. The seminar was attended by many parliamentary deputies, led by PASOK Executive Committee General Secretary Akis Tsohatzopoulos and representatives from the Coalition of the Left and Progress and the Communist Party. Athens, 30/8/93 (ANA) - Piraeus port authorities arrested three Pakistani illegal immigrants and the skipper and the crew of the yacht ferrying them when the three men attempted to disembark at Vouliagmeni marina Saturday. The three told authorities that they and four other compatriots had boarded the "Noces de Jeannette", a private yacht registered under the British flag, at a Turkish harbour. They said they had paid the German skipper US 2,000 dol. each to be taken to a European port. The skipper and crew - two Polish nationals - were arraigned. The boat was confiscated, as was US 4,500 dol., 400 marks and 365,000 Turkish pounds in banknotes found aboard the vessel. All men were charged under the Immigration Act and remanded in custody pending trial. New York, 30/8/1993 (ANA -- M. Georgiadou) - Industry, Energy and Technology Under-secretary Theodoros Damianos and Hellenic Industrial Development Bank director Eftychia Pylarinou have met with New York business circles and ethnic Greek community organisations here in the last week in an effort to promote investment in Greece. Among other events and meetings , they attended a presentation, attended by businessmen and officials, at the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce last Monday. Ms. Pylarinou also hosted a working dinner for about 100 US and Greek-American businessmen during her stay in New York. Guests at the dinner included senior executives of the Greek - American banks Olympian, Atlantic and Interbank and major businesses such as Red Apple, Trataros Constructions , International Paper, Omega, Capital, Family Products, Continental Food Products and others. Mr. Damianos and Ms. Pylarinou had a number of meetings with executives from financial institutions wanting more detailed information on specific subjects. In a meeting with the leadership of ethnic Greek organisations, Ms. Pylarinou and Mr. Damianos underlined the need for the Greek - American community to act as an information link, keeping American and ethnic Greek business circles up to date on economic developments and investment opportunities in Greece, which, they stressed, by virtue of its membership in the EC was a jumping board to doing business in Eastern Europe. They also had, meetings with New York Mayor David Dinkins and Archbishop of North and South America Iakovos. Melbourne, 30/8/1993 (ANA - S. Hatzimanolis) - Greek- Australian reporter Eleni Vatsikopoulou was yesterday awarded the UN prize for the best television documentary. Ms. Vatsikopoulou works with the Australian multilingual television network SBS. The United Nations awarded her the "peace prize" for a series of five episodes entitled "Three sides of the same story". The documentary was based on the conflict in former Yugoslavia and focused on Bosnia, where Ms. Vatsikopoulou presented the horror of war experienced by Croats, Serbs and Moslems. Ms. Vatsikopoulou was born in Florina and grew up in Adelaide. Before moving to SBS in 1988 , she worked with the Australian state television network ABC. Last year she won the Walkey award, one of Australia's most distinguished journalism awards. Athens, 30/8/1993 (ANA) - A new hospital is to be built in Mournia near Chania, Crete, Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis announced yesterday. Speaking after chairing a meeting of local officials, Mr. Mitsotakis said the new unit would have 400 beds and cost 14 billion drachmas. There are plans to expand to 600 beds at a later stage. Work will begin this year, the premier said. --- The electoral law will not be changed, Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis said yesterday. Mr. Mitsotakis was meeting with the press in Chania, Crete.
