June 10, 1993 [excerpts] Date: 11 Jun 1993 16:25:08 GMT Athens, 10/6/1993 (ANA) The Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB) has signed a new contract with NATO concerning the repair of T-F33 air motors for AWACS aircraft covering the period between 1993-1996. The contract's value amounts to eight million dollars which Greece's industrial returns from its participation in the "AWACS" programme are expected to fully utilise. The contract was signed following a relevant NATO tender and constituted a continuation of the programme implemented in 1982. With the signing of the contract, EAB is rendered in essence the exclusive repairs agency for these materials in NATO. Athens, 10/6/1993 (ANA) Council of Europe officials meeting in the coastal resort of Porto Carras yesterday decided to amend its Social Development Fund's charter to permit the funding of programmes in eastern and central European countries. The amendment is the first change in the fund's charter since it was drawn up in 1956. Catherine Lalumiere, secretary general of the Council of Europe, said the amendment would allow central and eastern European nations to become members of the fund and thus benefit from its funding programmes. "It will also give a practical solution to the numerous and huge problems threatening stability in these regions and at the same time endangering peace and security in western Europe", she said. Bulgaria will be the first country to become a member of the fund, following the change in its charter. The EC officials also agreed to create a new "Emergency Fund" to provide disaster aid and emergency relief. Chairman of the fund Paul Dyfour described the meeting as a milestone and also congratulated Foreign Undersecretary Virginia Tsouderou on Greece's initiatives in the Balkans, saying that Greece set the example for other countries. "If Greece makes such efforts, shouldn't other countries with stronger economies follow?" she said. Athens, 10/6/1993 (ANA) The double mobile European Community exhibition on "Protection of European Architectural Heritage" and the "Award of Modern Architecture 92 - Mies Van Der Rohe Pavilion" will take place in Thessaloniki at the National Bank of Greece's Cultural Centre of Northern Greece from today until June 21. According to an announcement by the European Commission's Office in Athens, the exhibition is organised by the Thessaloniki Aristotelian University's faculty of architecture with the cooperation of the Thessaloniki municipality and the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace. Thessaloniki is the third stop of the photographic and audio-visual exhibition after Menton (France) and Milan (Italy). The exhibition will then move on to Malbork (Portugal), Ostend (Belgium), Limerick (Ireland) and London. Forty-four pilot-plans were selected in 1992 concerning the protection of European architectural heritage in the European Community and in three countries of central and eastern Europe. A total of three million ECUs was provided for these programmes. The section of the exhibition concerning modern architecture includes 30 plans of European architects short-listed for the final phase of the Mies Van Rohe foundation's award in Barcelona in November 1992.
