MIDDAY EXPRESSNews from the Communication Directorate General's midday briefingNouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Direction Générale Communicationb21/08/08[01] Benita Ferrero-Waldner today welcomes the release of Andrei Kim and Sergei Parsyukevich, two Belarusian political prisonersBenita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, said: “I am delighted by this news. The freeing of Andrei Kim and Sergei Parsyukevich, taken together with the recent release of Alyaksandr Kazulin are encouraging signs. The European Union has repeatedly called for the release of all political prisoners and for Belarus to take steps towards compliance with core European values of democracy, human rights and respect for rule of law. This news comes at a critical time as Belarus prepares for parliamentary elections next month. Following a green light given by the French Presidency EU support is being sent via Member States and coordinated by the European Commission's Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC). This civil protection assistance comes in addition to the Commission humanitarian aid already provided right after the start of the conflict.Rediffusion [05] European Commission President Barroso expresses sympathy over Madrid plane crashThe European Commission expresses its sympathy to the families of the victims of today's airplane crash in Madrid.
