[02] Commission clears acquisition of NB by HAL and Egeria

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of N.V. Nationale Borg- Maatschappij (NB) of The Netherlands by HAL Investments B.V. (HAL) and Egeria Capital B.V. (Egeria), both of The Netherlands. HAL is an international investment company investing in companies in a wide range of sectors. Egeria is a private equity firm making investments in companies in the Netherlands or in companies having a Dutch link. NB is an insurance company specialised in issuing bonds and guarantees. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[03] Commission allocates €15,5 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable groups in Myanmar/Burma and Burmese refugees

The European Commission has allocated €15.5 million in humanitarian aid for vulnerable groups in Burma/Myanmar and to Burmese refugees along the Myanmar-Thai border. The decision will help address some of the basic humanitarian needs of around one million needy people in Myanmar. Aid will be provided in the health, food aid, nutrition, and water and sanitation sectors, as well as for the protection of certain threatened groups. It will also support humanitarian assistance to over 150,000 Burmese refugees along the Myanmar-Thai border who are almost entirely dependent on international aid. The funding is managed by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

[04] Indonesia and EU agree to tackle illegal logging through a "FLEGT" Partnership

The Hon. M.S. Kaban, Minister of Forestry of Indonesia met European Commissioners Louis Michel and Stavros Dimas, responsible for Development and Environment respectively, in Brussels on 8th January 2007. They agreed to initiate formal negotiations towards conclusion of a voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT), which will provide assurance that Indonesian forest products imported to the EU are verified to be legal. The agreement will also provide for cooperation, including capacity building, market and technical studies and knowledge-sharing.

[05] Commission convenes the Oil Supply Group to address oil supply disruptions to the EU

The European Commission is convening this Thursday morning a meeting of its Oil Supply Group to analyze the impact of the recent cuts in oil supplies from Russia via Belarus and to possibly explore measures in the case of any shortage of oil products. "It is unacceptable that energy suppliers or transit countries do not inform their counterparts about decisions that may affect their supplies. We call upon the two Parties involved to rapidly find a mutually acceptable solution to the current situation and to restore oil supplies to the European Union immediately. It is also important to ensure that ways are found to avoid this kind of disruption to energy supplies occurring again", said Commissioner Piebalgs on 9 January.
