[01] New Member States must speed up practical preparations for successful
changeover to the euro, report shows
With less than a year to go before a possible decision admitting some of
the new European Union members into the euro area, the practical
preparations for the introduction of the single currency are well under way
in Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia. But the pace needs to be
stepped up especially in those countries that aspire to change over to the
euro in 2007. Consumer fears that certain sectors will seize the
opportunity to increase prices abusively must also be properly addressed.
These are the main findings of the European Commission's second report on
the practical preparations for the adoption of the euro in the new Member
States. This report does not prejudge a future conclusion on whether any of
the ten new Member States fulfil the Maastricht convergence criteria to
qualify for the euro which will be the subject of a separate report next
year.
[02] Comenius : pour des écoles et des enseignants de qualité en Europe
La Commission européenne a approuvé aujourd'hui une enveloppe de €100
millions destinés à soutenir plus de 50 nouveaux projets et réseaux
européens dont l'objectif est d'améliorer la qualité et de renforcer la
coopération dans le domaine de l'enseignement scolaire. Dans l'ensemble,
ces nouvelles initiatives seront réalisées par près de 500 organisations
établies dans les 31 pays participant désormais au programme Socrates.
Comenius est le volet consacré à l'enseignement scolaire du programme
d'action européen Socrates mis en place dans le domaine de l'éducation.
Grâce au soutien qu'il apporte aux partenariats entre écoles, à la
formation des enseignants et aux réseaux d'établissements scolaires,
Comenius touchera plus de 750.000 élèves et 100.000 enseignants cette
année, dans plus de 11.000 écoles réparties sur tout le territoire
européen.
[03] Markos Kyprianou visits SE Asia to discuss avian influenza and other
issues
The European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, Markos
Kyprianou, will visit Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia, during an
official tour of South East Asia from 6-16 November. Avian Influenza, which
has been endemic in parts of the region since 2003, will be high on the
Commissioner's agenda during his trip. He will meet with senior leaders and
ministers to discuss the current avian influenza situation in each country
and the measures being taken by the national authorities and international
partners to address the problem. Other issues that Mr Kyprianou will be
discussing during his 10-day trip include food safety and Sanitary and
Phytosanitary issues (SPS), and certain public health challenges such as
AIDS.
[04] September 2005 compared to August 2005 : industrial producer prices up
by 0.5% in both euro-zone and EU25
According to Eurostat, the euro-zone industrial producer price index rose
by 0.5% in September 2005 compared with the previous month. In September
2005, EU25 prices also increased by 0.5%. In August, prices gained 0.4% in
the euro-zone and 0.5% in the EU25. In September 2005 compared to September
2004, industrial producer prices increased by 4.4% in the euro-zone and by
5.3% in the EU25.

Selon les chiffres publiés aujourd'hui par Eurostat, le taux de chômage
de la zone euro, corrigé des variations saisonnières, s'est élevé à 8,
4% en septembre 2005, contre 8,5% en août. Il était de 8,8% en septembre
2004. Le taux de chômage de l'UE25 a été de 8,6% en septembre 2005,
inchangé par rapport à août. Il était de 9,0% en septembre 2004. En
septembre 2005, les taux les plus bas ont été enregistrés en Irlande (4,
3%), aux Pays-Bas (4,6%), au Royaume-Uni (4,6% en juillet), au Danemark (4,
7%) et en Autriche (5,2%). Les taux de chômage les plus élevés ont été
observés en Pologne (17,7%), en Slovaquie (16,4%), en Grèce (9,9% en
juin), en France (9,4%), en Espagne (9,3%) et en Lettonie (8,8%).
