MIDDAY EXPRESSNews from the Press and Communication Directorate General's midday briefingNouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Direction GĂ©nĂ©ral Presse etbCommunication14/06/05[01] Commission to light up Europe's world-leading networking infrastructure for scientists and studentsFrom today onwards, GÉANT2, Europe's world-class research networking infrastructure, will use pulsed light (photons), rather than electrons, to carry huge volumes of research data faster than ever before. Dark fibre- optic cables offering a performance of up to 320 Gigabit per second are lit to process data for advanced applications such as high-energy physics experiments or to connect radio telescopes worldwide. Europe's research network will thereby supply unprecedented computing power to an estimated three million users from over 3,500 academic institutions in 34 countries across Europe. How Europe's SMEs are seeing the business advantage in CSRWhat does a small cleaning company from Lyons paying for its employees to learn to read and write have in common with a small video production company from rural Wales that makes a point of recording and creating videos for its local community? And what, for that matter, do both these companies have in common with a group of Maltese hotels that are built to minimise their impact on the island’s environment and its natural resources? The answer is that they are all small businesses that are practising corporate social responsibility (or CSR). CSR is a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations on a voluntary basis. The term itself tends to be associated with large companies, but some of the most innovative and inspiring examples of CSR are to be found amongst smaller businesses.[04] Ouverture de la distillation de crise en GrèceLa Commission europĂ©enne a adoptĂ© un règlement ouvrant la distillation de crise en Grèce. Une distillation de crise de 1,5 millions d'hl de vin de qualitĂ© pour la France et de 4 millions d'hl de vins de table pour l'Espagne a dĂ©jĂ Ă©tĂ© ouverte (voir Midday Express du 29 avril 2005).[05] Commission clears acquisition of DSM by Gilde Buy-OutThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of DSM Bakery Ingredients, currently controlled by Royal DSM NV (DSM) of the Netherlands, by Gilde Buy- Out Fund II (Gilde Buy-Out) also of the Netherlands, belonging to the Rabobank Group.
