  • [01] Accounting Standards : Charlie McCreevy sees agreement with S.E.C. as progress toward equivalence

    In Washington today, top officials of the Europan Commission and the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), meeting in the context of the EU-US Financial Markets Regulatory Dialogue, reached agreement on a 'roadmap' toward equivalence between International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

    [02] Commission clears merger of MTFG and UFJ

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the full merger of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group, Inc (MTFG) of Japan and UFJ Holdings Inc (UFJ) also of Japan. MTFG is the holding company of a global group providing a comprehensive range of financial services worldwide through its two main subsidiaries, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and the Mitsubishi Trust and Banking Corporation. These include banking, assets management and securities services and global trading activities. Based in Japan, MTGF is present in Asia, USA and Europe. UFJ is a holding company providing a wide range of financial services, mainly through its main subsidiaries, UFJ Bank, UFJ Trust Bank and UFJ Tsubasa Securities. UFJ is mainly present in Asia but also has activities in Europe and USA. As a result of this merger, the holding company will be renamed Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

    [03] Commission clears acquisition of Leaf International by Nordic Capital and CVC

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Leaf International B.V. (Leaf) of the Netherlands by Nordic Capital Fund (Nordic Capital) of Jersey, Channel Islands and CVC European Equity Partners. Leaf owns the former sugar confectionery business of CSM nv (CSM Sugar Confectionery) and is currently controlled by CVC European Equity Partners, which will retain joint control. Nordic Capital is a private equity fund, mainly active in the Nordic region and present in a variety of industries. CVC European Equity Partners holds investments in companies in various industries in Europe and in the Asia-Pacific region. The CVC Group is composed of privately-owned entities which provide investment advice or manage investments on behalf of investment funds. Leaf produces and markets sweets, pastilles and chewing gum and distributes other sugar confectionary products on behalf of third parties. It is active mainly in the Nordic region, Benelux, France and Italy. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

    [04] Margot Wallström reçoit le Prix International Aragon

    La vice-présidente de la Commission européenne Margot Wallström se verra remettre le prix International Aragon ce 22 avril. Le Prix International Aragon, décerné pour la première fois cette année, vise à reconnaître les actions qui ont contribué de manière décisive au développement international de valeurs culturelles, scientifiques ou humaines qui ont un intérêt social ou politique permanent pour la communauté aragonaise. Mme Wallström se verra remettre ce prix au titre de son action durant son mandat précédent à la Commission européenne comme Commissaire en charge de l'environnement dans le domaine du développement durable. Outre sa contribution au Protocole sur la Biodiversité de Carthagène et aux directives sur les carburants et le commerce d'émissions, la remise de ce prix vise plus particulièrement à distinguer l'action de Margot Wallström en faveur de l'entrée en vigueur du Protocole de Kyoto. Le jury a également tenu à souligner l'appui de Mme Wallström à un modèle énergétique base sur les sources d'énergies propres et ses efforts pour garantir l'application de la directive "Politiques de l'eau".

    [05] Danuta Hübner discusses future cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

    European Commissioner Danuta Hübner met Jean Lemierre, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), at a working dinner on 21 April in Brussels to discuss future cooperation on regional policy initiatives in central and eastern Europe.

    Dans la zone euro, l'indice des entrées de commandes dans l'industrie a diminué de 2,6% en février 2005 par rapport à janvier 2005, selon les estimations publiées par Eurostat. Cet indice avait baissé de 6,9% en janvier, après une hausse de 7,9% en décembre 2004. Dans l'UE25, les entrées de commandes ont diminué de 1,7% en février 2005, après une baisse de 7,0% en janvier et une hausse de 10,4% en décembre. Par rapport à février 2004, les entrées de commandes dans l'industrie ont progressé en février 2005 de 2,9% dans la zone euro et de 4,7% dans l'UE25.
