[01] EU/Iran negotiations for Trade & Cooperation Agreement to restart on
12Â January
The European Commission will resume negotiations with Iran for a Trade and
Cooperation Agreement (TCA) in Brussels on 12 January 2005. The decision to
resume TCA negotiations follows the "Paris agreement" between Iran and the
United Kingdom, France and Germany, and the subsequent verification of the
suspension of Iran's enrichment and reprocessing activities as confirmed by
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution of November 2004.
Negotiations relating to political dialogue and counter-terrorism will be
held in parallel with the TCA discussions on 13 January.
[02] La Commission se réjouit de la décision des autorités cubaines
La Commission européenne se réjouit de la décision unilatérale prise
par les autorités cubaines visant à rétablir les relations avec l'Union
européenne. Le président de la Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso, a
salué cette évolution qui "devrait permettre d'ouvrir de nouvelles
perspectives dans les relations entre l'Union européenne et Cuba". Le
commissaire à l'Aide humanitaire et au Développement, Louis Michel, se
rendra prochainement à La Havane pour s'entretenir avec les autorités
cubaines sur l'état des relations bilatérales.
[03] Newcastle disease in Bulgaria : suspension of imports limited to one
district
As a result of the outbreak of Newcastle disease in Bulgaria in the
district of Kardzhali region and in accordance with the Directive
introducing EU measures for the control of this disease, the European
Commission adopted on 23Â December 2004 a safeguard measure suspending all
imports from Bulgaria of live poultry including hatching eggs, fresh
poultry meat, game meat and their products. Bulgaria has now communicated
further information on the disease situation and requested for
regionalisation of the import restrictions. As there is no indication of
the disease in the rest of the country, the Standing Committee on the Food
Chain and Animal Health agreed on a Commission proposal to limit the
suspension of imports to the single district of Kardzhali. The proposal
will enter into force after formal adoption by the Commission and is
applicable until 16 May 2005. Newcastle disease is a contagious disease in
poultry that causes major losses in the sector if spread but that has no
impact on human health. For more information on this disease see:

[04] EU-India : Peter Mandelson to visit India (12-14 January 2005)
European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson will travel to India this week
for meetings with Indian leaders, trade officials and industry
representatives. The visit will be the first to India by a member of the
new Barroso Commission. Commissioner Mandelson will deliver a keynote
speech to the Confederation of Indian Industry in which he will he will
welcome India’s rise as a global trading power and urge it to play a
leading role in working for an ambitious agreement in the Doha Development
Agenda.
[05] Fisheries statistics : EU25 fishery production fell by 17% between
1995 and 2002 - an increasing share of aquaculture
In 2002 the EU25 produced nearly 7.6 million tonnes of fishery products, or
about 5% of the world total. Between 1995 and 2002 EU25 production fell by
17%, while world production rose by 17% over this period. Amongst the
Member States, Denmark (1.47 million tonnes) was the largest producer in
2002, followed by Spain (1.15 mio tonnes), France (0.95 mio tonnes) and the
United Kingdom (0.87 mio tonnes). These four Member States accounted for
almost 60% of the total EU25 production. Between 1995 and 2002 nearly all
Member States reported falls in production. The largest falls over this
period were registered by Denmark (-570000 tonnes or -28%), Spain (-260000
tonnes or -18%), Poland (-200000 tonnes or -44%) and Italy (-160000 tonnes
or -26%). Only Lithuania (+93000 tonnes or +157%) recorded a significant
increase in production. These figures come from a report issued today by
Eurostat.
[06] Publication d'études sur le sport en Europe
La Commission européenne publie aujourd'hui sur son site internet 4
études qui avaient été commanditées via un appel à propositions dans le
cadre de l'Année européenne de l'éducation par le sport. Les sujets
traités sont : "Sport et multiculturalisme", "Sport de haut niveau et
parcours scolaire", "Sport et emploi" et "Sport et santé". Ces études
serviront notamment aux réflexions de la Commission sur la manière de
mieux intégrer les valeurs éducatives du sport dans la nouvelle
génération des programmes éducation et formation actuellement en
discussion. Un résumé de ces 4 études, ainsi que l'intégralité de

L'Année européenne de l'Education par le Sport a été clôturée en
décembre dernier lors d'une cérémonie à Papendal (Pays-Bas). Un rapport
d'évaluation de cette Année européenne sera publié à la fin du premier
