  • [01] Buying green: how public authorities can help save the environment and taxpayer’s money

The European Commission has produced a Handbook on Green Public Procurement. It explains in clear, non-technical terms how public purchasers, such as schools, hospitals and national and local administrations, can take into account the environment when buying goods, services and works. Each year public authorities spend some 16% of EU GDP, around €1,500 billion, on goods, services and works. If they opt for environmentally sound goods, services and works, they will help the EU reach sustainable development. Green purchasing increases demand for green goods, encourages green production and helps environmentally friendly technologies conquer the market. It also considers efficient use of energy and resources as well as waste prevention, thus contributing to saving taxpayer's money. The new Handbook gives best-practice examples and provides advice all along the steps of a procurement procedure.

[02] Commission clears acquisition of Greek electrical goods retailer Kotsovolos by Dixons

The European Commission has granted clearance, under the Merger Regulation, to the proposed acquisition of Greek consumer electrical goods retailer Kotsovolos by Dixons a company active in the same business but with no presence in Greece until now. (The deal, notified on July 26, was examined under a simplified procedure)

[03] Commission clears Lactalis buy of Spanish dairy products producers Grupo Prado Cervera and Central Lechera Vallisoletana

The European Commission has granted clearance, under the Merger Regulation, to the proposed acquisition of Grupo el Prado Cervera S.L. (GPC) and Central Lechera Vallisoletana (CLV), two Spanish dairy products companies, by Lactalis Iberia S.A., another Spanish dairy products firm which belongs to Belgian holding company BSA. GPC and CLV are presently controlled by French company Alliance Agroalimentaire. Although Lactalis and the acquired businesses have overlapping businesses, their combined market shares remain modest. (The operation, notified on July 30, was examined under a simplified procedure)
