[01] Romano Prodi offers his condolences to Sukarnoputri Megawati
The President of the European Commission Romano Prodi has sent the
following message to the President of the Republic of Indonesia
Sukarnoputri Megawati : "It is with shock and horror that I have learnt the
tragic news of the bomb attacks in Bali. On this sad occasion, the
Commission of the European Communities repeats its full rejection of any
form of terrorism. We share your sorrow and our hearts go out to the
families and loved ones the victims leave behind."
[03] Commission clears transaction in the Swedish waste management sector
The European Commission has cleared the proposed multiple transaction
whereby SITA SA and Sydkraft AB will jointly control SITA Sverige AB and
simultaneously SITA Sverige and Sydkraft AB will jointly control EcoPlus
AB. The parties are active in the Swedish waste management sector in areas
such as collection and disposal of ordinary waste and collection, treatment
and disposal of hazardous waste. The deal presents no major overlaps or any
vertical integration problems.
[04] Research : Commission highlights the new challenges for Food and
Agriculture
The changing attitude of European society to research in food and
agriculture demands that researchers pay more attention to the concerns of
the public and other stakeholders. Today in Brussels, the annual Euragri
conference, entitled "Science for Society Science with Society" and
sponsored by the European Commission, addressed European consumers'
concerns and proposed new goals, roles and rules to respond better and
quicker to the needs of society. Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin
presented EU initiatives in this area, and called for a European platform
on plant science to be formed on the basis of a network of national
research programmes. Within the forthcoming 6th EU Research Framework
Programme (FP6 2003-2006), €685 million have been earmarked for food
quality and safety.
