  • [01] European Union: €22 billion extra ODA up to 2006

European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Poul Nielson, underlined at a press briefing today that the European Union (EU) has committed itself to make available around €22 billion in extra official development assistance (ODA) between now and 2006. The EU is already the developing world's biggest trade partner and aid donor. The EU also wants economic and social development to be accompanied by changes in consumption patterns in order to make development sustainable. Waste and transport are two examples of areas where it is becoming clear that trends must be broken.

[04] Commission clears joint venture between Karlsberg and Brauholding International

The European Commission has cleared under the Merger Regulation the acquisition of a 45% stake by Brauholding International in the Karlsberg group's subsidiary Brauerei- und Biervertriebsgesellschaft. The transaction will leave the two parents in joint control of a company whose main business is brewing and beer wholesaling in Germany, but this does not give rise to any competition concerns as the German beer market is a very competitive one.
