• [02] Commission clears joint venture by Skanska and Posten The European Commission has cleared the acquisition of joint control by Swedish companies Skanska Sverige AB and Posten AB of The House of Commerce AB (HOOC), a company which will organise fairs, exhibitions and showrooms.
  • [03] Commission adopts emergency measures to help recovery of Northern hake The European Commission has adopted emergency measures to help the recovery of the stock of hake which, according to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), is outside safe biological limits. The aim of these measures, which combine technical, control and data collecting elements, is to protect young hake in both targeted and non-targeted fisheries. "The Northern hake stock is in danger of collapse. That is why urgent and immediate action is required. These measures have been drawn up following consultation with scientists, the Member States and the fishermen concerned. Scientifically speaking, the measures should have been even more stringent. However, the Commission has the difficult task of striking the right balance between the need to ensure the recovery of the hake stock and the need to avoid disproportionate restrictions on the many different fisheries. This emergency plan, combined with our long-term recovery strategy should help to rebuild the hake stock", Commissioner Franz Fischler, responsible for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, said. The emergency measures will be directly applicable in all the Member States for the next six month pending the adoption of more permanent measures.
  • [05] BSE : results of the Standing Veterinary Committee The Standing Veterinary Committee yesterday gave a favourable opinion on the testing provisions foreseen in the package of measures put forward by the European Commission updating the regulation on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE). The Commission will now adopt this proposal. The Committee did not reach a qualified majority on the other measures foreseen in the second proposal of the Commission. It includes the prolongation of the present ban on feeding meat-and-bone meal, the extension of the range of imported products to the EU to be governed by protective measures with effect from 1 October 2001 and the amendment of the BSE eradication rules, introducing an option for local competent authorities not to require the killing of all cattle in herds where a BSE case has been confirmed. This proposal will now be send to the Council for adoption.
