[01] EU reaction to the speech by US President Bush on climate change
In a reaction to a speech given by US President George W. Bush on climate
change, European Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrm said : "We of
course welcome that the US wants to work with other countries to address
climate change. However, President Bush has basically repeated what he said
earlier. We think it is time to move on from analysing the issues towards
action. I am worried that his speech is short of action to actually reduce
emissions." Swedish Environment Minister Kjell Larsson, representing the EU
Presidency, said : "We regret that President Bush continues to reject the
Kyoto Protocol. Abandoning the Kyoto Protocol would mean postponing
international action to combat climate change for years - and we are
already late. We can not accept this. The EU ministers have therefore
confirmed that they stand firm behind the Kyoto Protocol and are ready to
proceed with the ratification of it. Without the US the Protocol will be
less effective of course since they account for a large part of world
emissions."
[02] First Summit between EU leaders and US President George W. Bush
On 14 June 2001 European Commission President Romano Prodi and Swedish
Prime Minister Gran Persson, the current President of the European Council,
will meet US President George W. Bush in Gteborg, Sweden. This will be the
first Transatlantic Summit since the new US Administration took office.
Leaders and top officials will hold several working sessions, and will meet
representatives of civil society. Mr Bush will then meet the EU Heads of
State and Government participating in the European Council, taking place
the following day in Gteborg. The Gteborg Summit will be particularly
significant, not only because of the importance of the subjects to be
treated, but also because it will provide the first opportunity under a new
US administration for both sides to consolidate their relationship and to
give it a new momentum. The EU and US have a shared interest and
responsibility to work together on a growing number of global, economic,
and political challenges, including on issues such as climate change, where
there have been recent high-profile differences.
[03] Commission clears merger of European flexible packaging activities of
Amcor, Danisco and Ahlstrom
The European Commission has cleared a planned merger of the European
flexible packaging businesses of Australian company Amcor Ltd., Danisco A/S
of Denmark, and Finland's Ahlstrom Corp. The joint venture will be
controlled by Amcor and Danisco, with Ahlstrom having only a minority
stake. The Commission concluded that the market would remain sufficiently
competitive with such strong players as Alcan and VAW Europack.
Continental
