  • [01] BSE Farm Council - Commission calls for swift decisions

On the occasion of the extraordinary Agriculture Council on BSE to be held today in Brussels, the European Commission called for firm and swift decisions to tackle the BSE-problem. "The Commission has brought forward a package of wide-ranging new proposals. We call on the farm ministers to agree on a European response to this European problem", Consumer Protection and Agriculture Commissioners David Byrne and Franz Fischler said.

[03] Frits Bolkestein urges Spain to agree energy taxation and European Company Statute proposals

[04] Pascal Lamy opens investigation into South Korean subsidies to shipbuilding industry

Today, European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy announced his decision to open an investigation into unfair practices concerning the South Korean shipbuilding industry under the EU Trade Barriers Regulation (TBR). This decision follows a detailed examination of a complaint lodged by the European shipbuilding industry on 24 October 2000. "We have looked carefully at the complaint of our industry and believe there are clear grounds for us to launch this investigation. We are treating the concerns of EU shipbuilders with the utmost seriousness. If necessary, we will take this all the way to the WTO", said Pascal Lamy.

[06] EU to observe elections in Guyana

The European Commission has taken a decision to fund the participation of an EU component to the International Observation Mission for the next general elections in Guyana. These elections were originally scheduled for 17th January 2001. However, since the registration of the voters was not completed on time, they have been postponed, and it is now expected that they will take place before the end of March 2001. The Head of the EU observers is Mr Mark Stephens, who will also be the Deputy Chief of the International Observers Group. In addition, some 30 EU Short Term Observers will be sent to Guyana shortly before the election day. The cost of the EU contribution will not exceed euro 314,000.

[07] Fish Producer's Organisations Forum in Brussels

Producers in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors will, for the first time, meet at a Forum of Producers' Organisations organised by the European Commission, on 4th and 5th December in Brussels. Some 200 people are expected to gather to exchange ideas and to examine a number of specific topics of interest to their industry. Commissioner Fischler, responsible for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, welcomed the initiative. He said : "As the interface between producers - that is, fishermen and fish farmers - and the market, fish Producers' Organisations are in an ideal situation to influence the conditions related to supply and demand. I am sure that the recently reformed common market organisation, which has strengthened Producers' Organisations, will enable them to play an even greater role in sustainable fisheries."
