[03] Business and Consumer surveys for May 1998 : favorable economic
conditions in Europe persist
The latest results from the business and consumer surveys conducted by the
European Commission's Directorate General for economic and financial
affairs are published today. Economic sentiment in the European Union
remained strong. Consumer confidence was higher in May compared with the
previous month. European consumers believe that the conditions for making
major purchases at present are more favorable. The financial situation of
households is also encouraging. The optimism among consumers was shared by
managers in retail trade, who viewed the present business situation as
better. However, export order books in manufacturing industry fell back
further, which together with a downward revision of production expectations
led to a contraction in the industrial confidence indicator. A new
aggregate for the euro-zone (EUR11) is presented for the first time,
providing information for the eleven Member States that will participate in
Economic and Monetary Union, form 1 January 1999.
[05] EU foreign ministers announce new measures in worldwide market-opening
initiative
European Union (EU) foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg yesterday
welcomed the progress made by the European Commission in opening world
markets to EU exporters, and agreed on further measures to eliminate trade
barriers. The Council of Ministers endorsed a report which highlighted the
growing involvement of businesses in identifying new and existing barriers
to trade under the EU's Market Access Strategy, with a view to taking
action to eliminate them. The new measures strengthen and streamline the
process for reviewing, analysing and taking action on barriers to trade.
The Commission will draw up a series of new reports on specific types of
barrier including intellectual property rights, standards and certification,
and trade related investment measures. It will also conduct geographical
reviews for discussion with the Member States. Finally there will be
improvements and extensions to the Market Access data base.
