  • [01] Commission intends to clear Scottish and Newcastle's standard pub leases

The European Commission intends to grant a retroactive exemption to the standard pub leases used by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), the largest brewer in the UK. Through the publication of its initial views (see OJ C 8 of 13/1/98), the Commission invites all interested third parties to submit their observations within one month, before deciding on the issue.

[03] Croatia: Commission approves humanitarian aid worth ECU 1 million for returning Serbs

The European Commission has approved a package of humanitarian aid worth ECU 1 million for Serbs returning to Croatia and for other Serbs in need there. About 250,000 Serbs fled Croatia during the war there in 1995, and up to 10,000, mainly elderly and infirm, stayed put in very isolated villages where they now face a very precarious existence. This programme is intended to help resettle those now able and willing to return to their homes, and to provide appropriate assistance for all those identified as being in need. The funding will cover food aid, toiletries and survival kits for returnees, essential repairs to housing, fuel, lamps, candles and winter clothing. The European Union has previously allocated ECU 153 million for refugee return to Bosnia and ECU 19.5 million for rehabilitation of utilities and housing in Eastern Slavonia also aimed at the return of displaced persons and refugees.
