    LUXEMBOURG - France threw the European Union's plans for a single currency into confusion on Monday when it asked for time to study a previously agreed pact to keep budget deficits tight after the currency is launched.

    [02] UK backs delay on stability pact

    LUXEMBOURG - Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown on Monday backed France's decision to delay signing the stability pact for monetary union and said he and the French finance minister agreed jobs were the European Union's top priority.

    [03] EMU stability pact not negotiable

    LUXEMBOURG - German Finance Minister Theo Waigel on Monday stressed the importance of budget discipline and stable prices and said the stability pact aimed at creating a solid basis for Europe's planned single currency was not up for discussion.

    LUXEMBOURG - European Commission President Jacques Santer will meet French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin on Thursday to discuss France's problems with the European Union's stability pact, a Commission spokesman said.

    LUXEMBOURG - Dutch Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm said on Monday that he still hoped for an agreement on the EU's stability pact at an Amsterdam summit next week, but acknowledged it could take time to integrate France's demands for greater coordination of economic policies.

    LUXEMBOURG - European Union countries endorsed Ireland's economic performance on Monday, but questioned whether inflation might not be set to rise, Irish Finance Minister Ruairi Quinn told reporters.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it was likely to propose later this month that Austria end its ban on imports of genetically modified maize.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday that two genetically modified rapeseed varieties developed by Plant Genetic Systems were approved for all uses after the company agreed to label the products.

    [09] Blokker's Toys "R" Us Dutch buy

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission's competition service has proposed blocking the acquisition by Dutch retailer Blokker of Toys "R" Us' Netherlands' operations, suggesting instead that it take control of only part of it, EU sources said on Monday.

    LUXEMBOURG - Switzerland and the European Union on Monday signed an agreement to cooperate more closely on customs control.
