THE HAGUE - A third of the way through its six-month European Union
presidency, the Netherlands faces a daunting task to meet its promise of
brokering treaty reforms to take the bloc's 370 million citizens into the 21st
century.

BRUSSELS - European Union member states have protested at the threat of a long
delay to proposals for the identification of animals and beef labelling, EU
officials and diplomats said.

THE HAGUE - The European Union said on Wednesday it would examine whether to
extend existing trade instruments for farm produce to industrialised goods in
a bid to help Central American states develop their war-torn economies.

BRUSSELS - In one of the European Union's more unusual trade complaints, its
executive Commission has complained to Argentina for not exporting enough of a
product.

ANKARA - Turkey said on Wednesday it welcomed a European Union plan to involve
Turkish Cypriots in the process of admitting the divided island to the bloc.

ATHENS - Greece said on Wednesday its European Union partners would pay a
price for pressing to include Turkish Cypriots in talks on Cyprus's accession
to the bloc and repeated threats to block further EU enlargement.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to clear British Airways Plc's
takeover of insolvent French airline Air Liberte, the spokesman for
Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia has been promised $70
million by donor groups to aid its economic reconstruction efforts.

NAIROBI - A suggestion at a European Union foreign ministers' meeting for a
possible arms embargo in Africa's Great Lakes region drew an angry protest on
Wednesday from Rwanda which said it was being targeted.
