STRASBOURG, France - European Commission President Jacques Santer denied on
Wednesday that it had ever put the interests of the beef market before public
health or tried to play down the dangers of madcow disease.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has no secret report on the danger of a
European Union foot and mouth epidemic, an official said on Wednesday.
[03] CJD epidemic could hit thousands
LONDON - The medical time bomb planted by mad cow disease may kill tens of
thousands of people -- or perhaps fewer than a hundred -- British
epidemiologists said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is planning to separate responsibilities
for food safety and agricultural policy following an internal review prompted
by the row over the handling of the mad cow crisis.

FRANKFURT - The European Monetary Institute on Wednesday declined comment on a
German magazine report that European Commission President Jacques Delors would
be the first president of the European Central Bank.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has no plans to present proposals in March
to force Deutsche Telekom to sell part or all of its cable television network,
a European Commission source said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - Britain's latest row with the European Commission, over British
Airways's planned deal with American Airlines, has prompted another visit to
an already well-thumbed EU treaty and its less-than-clear diktats.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has temporarily suspended moves to threaten
Dutch airline KLM with daily fines amid signs that the carrier will provide
data sought by the EU executive, an official said on Wednesday.
[09] Thomson Multimedia to get aid
PARIS - French Industry Minister Franck Borotra said on Wednesday that state
consumer electronics group Thomson Multimedia would get a capital injection in
the next few weeks.
[10] EU to rule on Danish ship aid
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to decide soon that illegal
state aid had been granted in five cases in the Danish shipbuilding sector and
that the support should be paid back, an EU source said on Wednesday.
