BRUSSELS - The European Commission has called a meeting of senior EU
veterinary officials on November 29 to review plans to ban the use of suspect
sheep tissue in human and animal food, a spokesman said.
[02] Renewable energy good for jobs
BRUSSELS - Increased use of renewable energy such as wood, wind, wave and
solar power would help improve the environment, create new jobs and reduce
dependency on imported fuels, the European Commission said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission accused the United States on Thursday of
jeopardising a global pact on ending tariffs on computer-related goods by
pushing for delays and exemptions.

VERSAILLES, France - The North Atlantic Assembly, a defence body grouping
parliamentarians from 40 countries including NATO's 16 nations, elected U.S.
Senator William Roth as its new president on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission urged Russia on Thursday to commit itself
not to introduce any new measures that were incompatible with World Trade
Organisation standards, a European Commission official said.

LONDON - Virgin Cola launched a formal complaint with the European Commission
on Thursday about what it sees as Coca-Cola Schweppes & Beverages' abuse of
its dominant position in Britain's cola market.

BRUSSELS - Industry Commissioner Martin Bangemann has made it clear he is not
happy with a deal between France and Germany that would delay liberalisation
of European Union postal services.

PARIS - French Prime Minister Alain Juppe and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl
reaffirmed their determination in a telephone conversation on Thursday to
press ahead with European monetary union as schedule

DUBLIN - The European Union said on Thursday it regretted Monday's elections
in Zambia were not held on a basis acceptable to all parties and urged the
government and its opponents to resolve their differences peacefully.

BRUSSELS - The European Union is set to ask the Western European Union
formally on Friday to provide air and logistics support for an eventual
international humanitarian aid effort in Africa's troubled Great Lakes region.

BRUSSELS - The European Union has agreed to extend for another six months
sanctions it imposed on Nigeria in a protest against human rights abuse.

VIENNA - European Commission President Jacques Santer said on Thursday there
was no turning back on the road to a single European currency and held out the
hope that closer economic ties would stem rising joblessness.

WASHINGTON - The United States said on Wednesday that a WTO challenge to its
Helms-Burton law against Cuba is a "lose-lose" proposition.

BRUSSELS - EU development ministers meet at 0900 GMT (Friday); hold public
debate on human and social development and EU development policy at 0900 GMT;
discussions over lunch focus on the international debt initiative, reform of
U.N. development organisations and coordination of projects and programmes in
Vietnam and over dinner on developments in the Great Lakes area of Africa.
BRUSSELS - EU fisheries ministers meet at 0900 GMT (Friday); decision on
satellite-based vessel monitoring system for Community fishing vessels and on
objectives and detailed rules for restructuring the Community fisheries sector
for the period of January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2002; discussions on the
fourth phase of the multi-annual guidance programme.

FRANKFURT - German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and various representatives from
