[01] Delay threatens single currency
BRUSSELS - European Union Monetary Affairs Commissioner Yves-Thibault de
Silguy said on Tuesday that delaying the start of the EU's single currency
would be a death sentence for the project as a whole.

BRUSSELS - The European Union's monetary committee ended the first day of a
two-day meeting to discuss a budget stability pact among countries joining a
single currency and related issues, sources said.
[03] Poland wants to join EMU
WARSAW - Poland's President Aleksander Kwasniewski will this week declare his
country's intention to join the European Union's planned monetary union as
soon as possible, his spokesman said on Tuesday.

BRUSSELS - European Commission President Jacques Santer said on Tuesday that
direct United States government interference in favour of civil and military
export sales could severely distort the global aerospace market.

BRUSSELS - Mergers would help boost the power Europe's defence and aerospace
industry in the face of fierce competition from the United States, EU
Industrial Affairs Commissioner Martin Bangemann said on Tuesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Tuesday denied suggestions it put
pressure on scientific experts dealing with mad cow disease to supress
evidence of its spread.

BRUSSELS - European Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler and U.S. Agriculture
Secretary Dan Glickman will meet to discuss bilateral issues on the margins of
this month's World Food Summit in Rome, a Commission spokesman said on

BRUSSELS - European Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn plans to attack
the European Union's tobacco subsidies on Wednesday, arguing that they
compromise its anti-smoking drive and give its critics ammunition.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission published on Tuesday a long list of
questions regarding the rescue of Banco di Napoli, one of Italy's top 10 banks
which faces serious liquidity problems after a reckless expansion in the early
1990s.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission and France are holding discussions over the
privatisation of defence and electronics giant Thomson SA even though the plan
still awaits clearance from a French Parliament commission.

GENOA, Italy - The credibility of the Italian government is at stake over the
sale of telecoms group Stet and the reduction of debt at state holding IRI,
European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Monday.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament and Council of Ministers remain deadlocked
over the draft directive on novel foods and will have to extend their
negotiations under the conciliation procedure, Council sources said on

year jail sentence passed on Chinese dissident Wang Dan by a Chinese court

over the past decade, Juergen Storbeck, the head of the European Union's
police agency said on Tuesday.
