BONN - Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi was due to discuss Europe's single
currency with Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Bonn on Thursday evening amid
continued German pressure for a rock-solid economic and monetary unio.
[02] Schengen's Nordic expansion
LUXEMBOURG - The Schengen Executive Committee on Thursday firmed up plans
to admit the five countries of the Nordic Passport Union by the end of the
year. The ministers reached political agreement on full membership terms
for European Union members Denmark, Sweden and Finland, and associate
membership for Norway and Iceland, which are outside the EU, Luxembourg
Justice Minister Marc Fischbach said.
[03] Van Miert eyes Canal Plus EBU link
BRUSSELS - Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert hinted again on
Thursday that French pay-television channel Canal Plus would be excluded
from rules allowing public broadcasters to pool forces to negotiate
exclusive sports rights.

BRUSSELS - Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas urged Western Europe on
Thursday to consider the price of not granting EU and NATO membership to his
country rather than the cost of doing so.
[05] EU condemns N.Korean submarine
DUBLIN - The European Union on Thursday condemned the incursion of a North
Korean submarine into South Korean waters last month and said Pyongyang must
abide by its armistice agreements.
[06] EU condemns killing in Cyprus
DUBLIN - The European Union has strongly condemned the killing last weekend of
Petros Kakoullis, an unarmed Greek Cypriot civilian who had crossed into the
north of the divided island.

IRELAND - European Commissioner Wulf-Mathies on official visit (Friday-
Saturday); meets Finance Minister Ruairi Quinn and other government members.
FINLAND - Finland holds municipal elections and the first elections to the
European Parliament on the same day (Sunday).
