[01] New UK plan to end beef dispute
BRUSSELS - Britain renewed efforts to defuse the "beef war" with its European
Union partners on Wednesday, offering a new plan for the gradual ending of a
worldwide ban on British beef. In LONDON, Britain's Foreign Secretary Malcolm
Rifkind said approval of a framework may be possible next week.

BRUSSELS - The European Union's Standing Veterinary Committee demanded on
Wednesday that Britain kill more cattle to eradicate mad cow disease, British
officials said.

LONDON - Britain said on Wednesday it will provide an extra four million
pounds for research into mad cow disease which has infected its cattle and
resulted in a worldwide ban of its beef by the European Union.

which might lead to the early detection of mad cow disease and its human

proposal to protect Greek feta cheese and 317 other regional food products
against competition from other areas.

changes providing more flexibility in a set-aside scheme for cereals, oilseeds
and protein crops.

made to simplify European Union legislation and to apply the subsidiarity

BRUSSELS - Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard's plans to withdraw the
draft directive on the use of landfill sites for waste will have to wait at
least until June 18 for adoption, her spokesman, Jesper Jorgensen said on

BRUSSELS - The European Commission launched a tender on Wednesday for a study
of ways to develop a "methodological and procedural" approach for setting eco-
