[A] TURKISH CYPRIOT / TURKISH PRESS[01] EVKAF alleges that a school for children from poor families and not a religious vocational school will be built in occupied Keryneia areaTurkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (22.12.17) reports that Ibrahim Benter, general director of the EVKAF religious foundation, has denied information published in Havadis that a religious vocational school [known as Imam Hatip in Turkish] will be built in occupied Keryneia area on 70 donums of land [Translator's note: A land measure of 1000 square meters] leased by EVKAF to Turkey's Education Foundation. In a statement issued yesterday, Benter argued that it is out of the question for a religious school to be built in occupied Keryneia or elsewhere in the occupied area of Cyprus and added that their target is to build a school of "international quality" standards, in which children from families in a dire economic situation will be offered "quality education". He said that this school will be built in cooperation with Turkey's Education Foundation and the breakaway regime's "ministry of education" and will include all levels of education, from kindergarten until lyceum. Noting that the decision to lease the above-mentioned land for 10 years has been made by EVKAF's administrative council, Benter argued that with its "TRNC International Education School Project", Turkey's Education Foundation aims at building an international education complex and offering the opportunity to students of all ages to be educated. He said that after a certain level the treachery language would be English and that other languages could also be taught. The complex will also include other facilities such as a tennis court, a kitchen, a sports arena, a theater etc. In statements on the issue, Serdar Denktas, self-styled minister of finance and "acting minister of education", told the paper that the "council of ministers" had no plan for the land leased to the EVKAF and that they have never discussed the issue. Moreover, former "minister of education", Ozdemir Berova said that during his term of duty they had discussed this issue but no decision was made. He also noted that no application was submitted and no procedure had begun. Commenting on the issue, Sener Elcil, general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot teachers' trade union (KTOS), said that an initiative has been launched for the construction of religious vocational schools in occupied Keryneia and Famagusta areas and described as "provocation" the construction of such school in occupied Keryneia, which faces the problem of inadequate number of schools. (I/Ts.) [02] Elcil argues that gangs exploit children from mixed marriages promising Republic of Cyprus' citizenship in return for moneyTurkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (22.12.17) reports that Sener Elcil, general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot teachers' trade union (KTOS), has told the paper that 17,000 children of mixed marriages between Turkish Cypriots and Turks are making individual efforts to get hold of the Republic of Cyprus' citizenship through bribery and by giving money to gangs. Elcil noted that KTOS has undertaken an initiative to help the above-mentioned persons and that 300 persons have applied to the trade union so far.According to Elcil, KTOS' effort is assisted by KISA organization, trade unions in the field of education and groups within political parties in the government-controlled area of Cyprus. Elcil claimed that the problem constitutes an obstacle in the way towards the solution of the Cyprus problem and that this mentality prevents people from coming together and talk. He alleged that the policy implemented by the Republic of Cyprus is wrong and added that after ascertaining the number of persons dealing with this problem they will launch a struggle through legal means. He said that at KTOS' initiative, the reexamination of around 4,000 cases has begun. (I/Ts.) [03] Siber says that Ozgurgun's "declaration of assets" will be made after the "elections"Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (22.12.17) reports that Sibel Siber, "speaker of the assembly", has said that in case "prime minister" Huseyin Ozgurgun is elected in the new "assembly" after the "elections" to be held on 7 January, 2018, he will be obliged to declare his assets and income within the period of time provided on the "law".Commenting on statements by opposition parties asking Ozgurgun to declare his assets, Siber noted that in case there is a significant change in their assets, the "deputies" are obliged to declare this to the "presidency of the assembly" within a month and added that Ozgurgun will be able to declare his assets after the forthcoming "elections". She also said that Ozgurgun had declared his property after the "elections" held on 28 July 2013 and made no other declaration because his term of duty has not ended yet and therefore it is not possible to make any comparisons [as regards the value of his assets then and his assets now]. (I/Ts.) [04] A recent "survey" conducted on December in the occupied area of Cyprus presents UBP in the first place and only "4 parties entering the parliament"Turkish Cypriot daily Detay newspaper (22.12.17), under the front-page title: "Ahead with a coalition", reports on the results of a "survey" conducted in the occupied area of Cyprus between December 8-10, regarding the "snap elections" which are scheduled to take place on January 7 in the occupied area of Cyprus. The "survey" was carried out on a sample of 1304 persons, through the face-face interviewing method and revealed that a "coalition government" is expected to be "formed" right after the "elections". Moreover, 7.36% of the participants in the "survey" chose not to give a response about which party they would vote for. The allowed variation of the "survey" is 2.85%. These parties are the UBP, CTP, HP and TDP. Taking into account the results of the "survey, the "distribution of seats in the TRNC's parliament" will be formed as follows: -UBP: 19 -CTP: 13 -TDP: 9 -HP: 9 (AK) [05] The "Turkish Cypriot beekeepers union" became a member of the FED APIMEDTurkish Cypriot daily Vatan newspaper (2212.17) reports that the "Turkish Cypriot beekeepers union's membership" to the Mediterranean Beekeepers Federation (FED APIMED) has been approved.According to the paper, the "Turkish Cypriot beekeepers union's membership" to FED APIMED was approved during the 9th Forum of the Mediterranean Beekeeper Federation which took place from 13-15 Dec. 2017 in Egypt. The occupation regime was represented in the forum by Kirata Kasapoglu, "chairman" of the "union". The "Turkish Cypriot beekeepers union's membership" to the FED APIMED will contribute to the development of "beekeeping in the TRNC" and to the union's actions abroad, writes the paper. When the teams reached the boat, they found it was carrying 43 migrants. "Teams from the Turkish Coast Guard's Mediterranean Region Command brought one Iraqi and 42 Syrian nationals to Mersin, which is directly across from Cyprus on the Mediterranean coast", the statement further read. Turkey has been the main route for migrants trying to cross into Europe, especially since the beginning of the civil war in Syria. [07] Turkey welcomes UN vote; Cavusoglu: UN vote on Jerusalem showed that dignity, sovereignty 'not for sale'Turkish daily Sabah (21.12.17) reported that Turkey on Thursday welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's clear-cut rejection of a United States decision on Jerusalem's status, and conveyed its expectations that the US President Donald Trump's administration would rescind its "unfortunate decision" without delay. In a series of tweets, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he welcomed the "overwhelming support" for the resolution at the UN General Assembly, where more than 100 countries voted in favor of calling for the United States to reverse its decision. "We expect the Trump administration to rescind without further delay its unfortunate decision, whose illegality has been clearly established by the UNGA," he wrote. Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdogan stated on December 21, in reference to Trump's threats to cut funding to countries that would vote against Washington in a motion at the UN condemning the US.'s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, that the United States cannot buy the people's will with dollars. "They call the US the cradle of democracy. The cradle of democracy is seeking to buy a nation's will with dollars," Erdogan said. "Mr. Trump, you cannot buy our will. I am calling on the whole world: Do not sell your struggle for democracy for a few dollars. Your stance is important," he said. Also, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated on Thursday that the United Nations members had shown that "dignity and sovereignty are not for sale" by voting in favor of a resolution calling for the United States to abandon its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. In comments made on Twitter, Cavusoglu said that Turkey, Palestine and other co-sponsors thank every country that supported the resolution at the UN General Assembly. Cavusoglu had previously criticized the US's move during his speech at the United Nations, saying: "Palestinians have the right to have their own state according to the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as capital. This is the main parameter and the only hope for a just and lasting peace in the region." Cavusoglu also called the US threats to cut development aid to countries which voted 'no' at the assembly as outright "bullying" and completely "unacceptable." "It is unethical to think that votes and dignity are for sale, you can be strong but that doesn't make you right," Cavusoglu added. "The diplomat was informed about Turkey's concern over a recent post retweeted by the country's foreign minister on social media targeting Fahreddin Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Medina from 1916-1919", the sources said. On Saturday, UAE's Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan re-tweeted a post suggesting the Ottoman governor had committed abuses against the local population and had even pilfered their property. In the post, Turks are accused of stealing "most of the manuscripts of the Mahmudiyah library in the city" and sending them to Turkey. "These are Erdogan's ancestors and their history with Arab Muslims," the tweet read. Replying to the offensive post, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday said: "It's no coincidence that those who take pride in keeping the company of tyrants -- at a time when Muslims are under violent attack -- would target Fahreddin Pasha." About the allegation of theft, Erdogan stressed that it was not stealing but "protecting the holy relics of the Prophet Mohamed" from the British invasion of Hejaz (present day western Saudi Arabia).
