[01] The occupation regime celebrates the Kurban Bayram Feast; Eroglu: "TRNC state" my strongest power on the negotiations table

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris (25.10.12) reports that the Feast of Sacrifice known also as Kurban Bayram Feast has began to be celebrated today in occupied Cyprus and will come to an end on Sunday.

On the occasion of the Kurban Bayram, several "politicians", political parties, trade unions and organizations issued separate messages.

In his message, the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, stressed the importance of unity and solidarity in the "TRNC".

Referring to the Cyprus negotiation process, Eroglu stressed the importance of everyone to be aware of the existence of the "TRNC state" and of the fact that the "TRNC" will continue to exist until the end. "Our strongest power, and my strongest ground on the negotiation table is our state which was established by the Turkish Cypriot people", Eroglu said.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot side truly desires a fair and comprehensive solution in Cyprus, Eroglu said that this fact has being accepted and acknowledged both by the UN and the international community. Stating that the solution and peace cannot be achieved with the unilateral support of the one side only, Eroglu accused the Greek Cypriot side for not showing the same willingness and sincerity for the solution. He continued and alleged that the Greek Cypriot politicians as well as the church continue to ignore the realities in Cyprus.

Stating that the Greek Cypriots continued to reject and oppose Turkey's active and effective "guarantees" on the island, Eroglu added that the Greek Cypriot side insists that any new partnership to be formed will be the continuation of the so-called Cyprus Republic, as he called the Republic of Cyprus, rather than a new state that will include the citizens of both states.

Stating that it is impossible to speak about a viable solution in Cyprus since the Greek Cypriots insist that a solution in Cyprus is not possible to be achieved without giving away numerous areas of occupied Morfou, Karpasia and Varoshia, Eroglu continued and called on the Greek Cypriot politicians in Cyprus to accept the realities and change their thoughts of mind.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris (25.10.12) reports that the American Ambassador in Lefkosia John. M. Koenig has sent a congratulatory message to the so-called prime minister Irsen Kucuk on the occasion of the Kurban Bayram Feast.

According to a written statement issued by the so-called prime ministry, Koenig in his message has sent his wishes to Kucuk and his family on behalf of the USA and of the entire world, and wished Kucuk to have a happy holiday during this holy day as he called it.

Messages for the Kurban Bayram Feast were also issued by the so-called prime minister Irsen Kucuk and the "speaker" of the so-called assembly Hasan Bozer.

[02] Fenerbahce arrives in Cyprus without any problems; Extensive coverage by the press

Turkish daily Zaman newspaper (25.10.12, online) reports that Turkish Fenerbahce football club arrived at Larnaka International Airport yesterday afternoon, without facing any problems, for playing tonight in Lefkosia with AEL Limassol football team, within the framework of UEFA Europa League. The paper writes that the team's passport control was held at the VIP room and that the team got on a bus after all procedures were completed within 20 minutes. According to the paper, three policemen escorted the team to the bus and three plain-clothes policemen got on the bus with Turkish delegation. The club's president and vice-president Aziz Yildirim and Ali Yildirim also came to the island with the team.

According to Ankara Anatolia news agency (24.10.12), the team of Fenerbahce came to Cyprus via the island of Rhodes. "The team entered Hilton Hotel without having any security problem", the agency reported.

Under the title "Come on Fenerbahce", Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (25.10.12) reports that the delegation was received at the airport by officials of the Turkish Cypriot Fenerbahce Supporters Association, who offered them a bunch of yellow and blue roses. The paper writes that the fact that "only 3-4 armed policemen were there at the airport, drew the attention".

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (25.10.12) also refers to the security measures and argues that the police took "special measures" and that only "a few policemen took measures at the airport".

Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar newspaper (25.10.12) covers the issue on its front page noting that the police of the Republic of Cyprus will be searching "in every nook and cranny" the Turkish Cypriot vehicles, which will cross over today from the occupied to the government-controlled area of the island, showing as pretext information they acquired, that members of nationalist "grey wolves" organization will come to the government-controlled area of the Republic because of the match and create trouble, not only at the stadium but in other places as well.

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (25.10.12) refers to the game under the title "'Let sports be unifying'" and points out that Fenerbahce's coach, Aykut Kocaman wished for the "unifying aspect of the sports to be on the field" and not its exclusionary or dissociative side.

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (25.10.12) refers to the game under the title "Fenerbahce wants victory in the south", as the paper calls the government-controlled area of the Republic of Cyprus.

[03] Erdogan congratulates Kucuk for his victory in UBP congress while dispute continues

Turkish Cypriot media continues to report about the crisis occurred after the controversial result at National Unity Party (UBP) election congress held last Sunday.

Self-styled prime minister Irsen Kucuk was re-elected chairman of UBP, but his main opponent Ahmet Kasif questioned his victory and applied to a "court" supporting that Kucuk's election is against UBP regulations.

Illegal Bayrak television (24.10.12) broadcast that the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has congratulated Irsen Kucuk on his re-election at the leader of UBP.

"I would like to congratulate you on your re-election as the leader of the National Unity Party at the UBP's 19th General Congress. It is my firm conviction that your party which has a significant place in the TRNC and the honorable struggle of the Cyprus Turks, will continue to work for the democracy and development of the country" the message read.

Commenting on the issue, Turkish Cypriot columnist Rasih Resat writes in Haberdar (25.10.12) that Erdogan did not wait for the decision of the "court" which will rule about the legitimacy of Kucuk's victory, before sending a message congratulating the self-styled prime minister. "The time that this message was sent must be noted", Resat writes and adds that even before an hour has passed since Kasif applied to a "court", messages congratulating Kucuk, started to come from important Ankara officials". This shows the Turkish government's support towards Kucuk, according to the columnist.

In addition, Kibris (25.10.12) writes that Ahmet Kasif filed yesterday a case at "Lefkosia district court" against the decision to declared Kucuk as the new chairman of UBP, supporting that this was against UBP's regulation. The judiciary for the case will be held on October 30.

Finally, in another development related to the case, Kibris also reports that the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of craftsmen and artisan and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, issued statements supporting that the crisis created before and after the UBP election congress, created uneasiness in occupied Cyprus and negatively affected the economy.

[08] Survey reveals Gul to be slightly ahead of Erdogan in Presidency race

Turkish daily Today's Zaman (24.10.12) reported that according to the results of a survey conducted by the Political Communications Office (SILO), President Abdullah Gul is the marginally preferred candidate over Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan among Turkish voters in the Presidential race.

The survey, conducted this month, found that 20.7 % of Turks wish to see Gul serving another term, while 20.3 % want to see Erdogan in the role after the next election, scheduled for 2014. Nearly 3 % said they would like Kemal K?l?cdaroglu, chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), to become the next President.

In the next presidential election, people will directly elect a President. The candidacy of Erdogan is likely, with Gul also eligible to run for the post a second time, as made clear by a ruling of the Constitutional Court in August. Gul having a second chance at the Presidency is bound to have a strong impact on Turkish politics.

The survey asked participants if Turkey should switch to a Presidential system. While 36.8 % said no, 31.5% said yes. The adoption of a Presidential system has been a constant subject of debate in Turkey, with Erdogan, who supports a Presidential system, frequently bringing the issue to the public's attention. Many have speculated that he hopes to become Turkey's first President under a new Presidential system.

Pollsters also questioned respondents about their voting behavior. If parliamentary elections were held today, 49 % of those polled said they would vote for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), a figure slightly lower than in the June 2011 elections, in which the ruling party won 50% of the vote.

The poll showed that the CHP would receive 26 % of votes cast. According to the survey, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) would receive 14.6 % of the vote, while the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) would garner 6.9 %.

In addition, the survey asked participants who they believed should become the new AK Party leader after Erdogan leaves office. More than 25 % said they would like to see Gul as the new leader of the ruling party. Fifteen percent said they would like Numan Kurtulmus to lead the AK Party. Kurtulmus, the former chairman of the Voice of the People Party (HAS Party), shut down his party and joined the AK Party last month. Around 12 % said AK Party Deputy Chairman Bulent Ar?nc should become the new chairman of the AK Party.

AK Party bylaws do not allow the leader of the party to be elected for more than four consecutive terms. Erdogan was elected chairman of his party for the fourth time in September. After he completes his final term in office, he is expected to retire from AK Party leadership and run for President.

In response to a question regarding the least favorable policies pursued by the AK Party, 21.9 % said they do not approve of the party's efforts for a "Kurdish initiative" through which the AK Party seeks peaceful and democratic solutions to the country's Kurdish question. Nearly 19% said their least favored policy is price hikes, and 7.4% objected to changes taking place in the education system.

The survey also questioned participants about the performance of the CHP as the country's main opposition party. Almost 59 % said they find the CHP unsuccessful in its performance, with only 13.9 % saying the CHP performs successfully in its role. Asked about the success of the MHP, only 8.9% considered the party successful. An overwhelming 59.7% called the MHP an unsuccessful political party. TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION
