[01] Eroglu: "The TRNC state will continue to exist, if we stand up without an agreement from the negotiating table"

Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes newspaper (08.03.12) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has alleged that they are exerting efforts to find an agreement at the negotiating table, but "if we stand up from the table without an agreement, know that the TRNC state will continue".

In statements yesterday during a visit paid to him by women members of the National Unity Party (UBP), Eroglu claimed that an agreement like the one which the Greek Cypriots want is not viable. He alleged that the Greek Cypriots always expect concessions from the Turkish side and added that no agreement will be reached without a mutual give and take.

Meanwhile, Gunes reports also that in statements during a visit paid to him by women members of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Eroglu said that the Turkish Cypriot side plans to take one or two steps more on some issues discussed at the Cyprus negotiations, but it could not go too far, because the Greek Cypriot side allegedly takes everything and makes no move. He claimed: "You give one, you give two and at the third one you expect a response. Unfortunately, we have not been able to start give and take. No agreement could be reached without a give and take".

[02] Ozersay alleges that the Turkish Cypriot arguments are within the UN parameters

Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes newspaper (08.03.12) reports that Kudret Ozersay, Turkish Cypriot leader Eroglu's special representative, has alleged that the arguments expressed by the Turkish Cypriot side at the negotiating table are within the UN parameters and they (the Turkish Cypriots) have not the slightest worry on this issue in the international community.

In statements yesterday on illegal Bayrak television, Ozersay argued that the Greek Cypriot side is annoyed by the "give and take" expression and added that the Greek Cypriot leadership should explain to its community that there will be no solution without a give and take.

Ozersay said that the criticism that the positions of the Turkish Cypriot side included provisions regarding two separate states and confederation existed during former Turkish Cypriot leader Talat's period as well and argued that the Greek Cypriot side always does this.

Ozersay said that in spite of the fact that the period of putting arguments and counter arguments at the table has to a great extent been completed, the face to face negotiations are still important from the point of view of forcing a give and take.

Ozersay claimed the Turkish Cypriot side was ready to show flexibility on all issues on the condition it sees a response and added that they are aware of the fact that if there will be an agreement it is not be possible for the positions of the one side to be accepted a hundred per cent.

Responding to a question regarding the report which the UN will prepare on the process, Ozersay claimed that the Turkish side does not negotiate with the aim of taking points or of accusing the other side, but for the solution of the problem within the UN parameters. He added: "The aim is to complete successfully the process or if it fails to prove this, to activate the international actors in order to put an end to uncertainty".

Ozersay argued that the Turkish Cypriot side negotiates for achieving a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation on the basis of political equality. "The international actors as well are confirming that we negotiate in the direction of this target and within the parameters", he claimed.

Ozersay referred also to the issue of cross voting and said that as a person who participated in the negotiations during the period of both former Turkish Cypriot leaders, he could say that nothing was agreed on this issue. He added that former Turkish Cypriot leader Talat has also confirmed this at a press conference he organized on 1 April 2010.

[03] Talat's view on cross voting via Facebook

Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar (08.03.12) reports that the former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, made statements about the cross voting in his social network Facebook account.

According to the paper, Talat wrote in his Facebook account that he felt like writing his thoughts on the issue because a big campaign is taking place in the occupied area against cross voting, in which it is supported that cross voting will be a big disaster for the Turkish Cypriots.

Talat stated that the cross voting will be used for the election of the presidency of the federal state and not for the election of the political organs of the two founding states, the parliament, the senate and the organs of the founding states. He went on and added that this was the logic behind this idea at the negotiations during the time he was participating in the Cyprus talks.

He went on and added that cross voting was a part of the 13-point proposal made on 4 January 2010 by the Turkish Cypriot side adding that these points are open for negotiations.

Finally, noting that the use of the cross voting will be the most useful tool for a federal state, Talat supported that the interests of those who are against it are clear and added that these persons are against peace.

[04] Letter by CTP's women to the UN and the two community leaders

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (08.03.12) reports that the women's organization of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) handed over a letter on the Cyprus problem yesterday to the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu and UN officials so that it is conveyed to Alexander Downer, UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Cyprus. CTP's women are expected to visit the Presidential Palace today and hand over the letter to President Christofias as well.

In statements yesterday before giving the letter to Eroglu, Sibel Sorakin, chairperson of CTP's women organization, said they want the non-solution in Cyprus to end the soonest and peace and solution to come to the island. She noted that a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution on the basis of political equality is an indispensable condition for them and added that both communities have shed a lot of tears and had losses.

Sorakin said that solution should definitely be reached and the Turkish Cypriot side should always be one step forward at the negotiations, do its duty and not be the side that avoids the solution, even if the other side shows lack of will.

According to the paper, the letter calls on the UN Secretary-General to show determination so that the negotiations end successfully and noted that the non-solution negatively influences the "country", the "people of the country" and the children, and that "isolations" restrict the "people of the country" and the women. The letter argues also that the negotiating process, which gave hope two years ago, has now come to the point of collapsing and adds that this is unacceptable.

[05] Eroglu met with the Swedish Ambassador; Meetings on a regular basis

Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes newspaper (08.03.12) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu met yesterday at his office with the Swedish Ambassador to Lefkosia Clas Gierow. Eroglu's special representative Kudret Ozersay attended the meeting. No statements were made afterwar

[06] Serdar Denktas met with TDP and DGP on his proposal for a referendum

Turkish Cypriot daily Bakis newspaper (08.03.12) reports that the Democratic Party (DP) continued yesterday its visits to the Social Democracy Party (TDP) and the Democracy and Trust Party (DGP) to ask support for its proposal to hold a referendum aiming to see what the Turkish Cypriots want or not want in case of failure of the Cyprus talks.

Serdar Denktas, leader of the DP, conveyed to Mehmet Cakici ? leader of the TDP ? his proposal for a referendum. Cakici said that they could evaluate the proposal but since the Cyprus talks are continuing, a referendum will not obtain anything new to the Turkish Cypriots.

Tahsin Ertugruloglu, leader of DGP, said that he will discuss the proposal with the party committee, adding that they do not expect to reach a solution that will be accepted by themselves at the existing ground from the negotiations.

[07] Bozer said that debates on post July Cyprus talks are unnecessary

Turkish Cypriot daily Bakis newspaper (08.03.12) reports that during a meeting with a trustee committee of the "World Turkish Cypriots Vakif" chaired by Vedat Celik, Hasan Bozer ? self-styled speaker of the assembly of the breakaway regime ? said that the discussions from now on what will happen after July on Cyprus talks, are unnecessary. He noted that in case the negotiations come to an end then they should decide as "people" for the future and added that these discussions may harm the politics.

Bozer said that in case there is no result in the negotiations until July then they can search for new paths. However, he said that they will exert an effort to be able to find a solution until July.

Celik, for his part, argued that in case the compensation issue comes in the agenda of the Cyprus talks, then the "Ortega report" can attribute in favour of the Turkish Cypriots. He also said that they want to organize again this year the "Expat Turks Congress" between 18-20 of April.

[08] Davutoglu reiterates that Turkey would not have any diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cyprus during its EU term presidency

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (08.03.12) reports from Amsterdam that the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Turkey would not have any diplomatic relations with Greek Cyprus, as he referred to the Republic of Cyprus, during the country's EU term presidency, even if they allowed the opening of "20 chapters" in Turkey's EU accession talks.

Speaking to daily Radikal's Ankara bureau chief Deniz Zeyrek on the plane as he was flying to Netherlands on March 6, Davutoglu said the opening of chapters should not be a favour done by one country for another, and "Greek Cyprus'" efforts to portray this as a favour were "unacceptable." He blamed "Greek Cyprus" first, followed by the EU, for not having opened the chapters by now.

[09] Ustel in the Berlin Tourism Fair: "We aim to increase the number of charter flights from Germany"

Under the title: "The aim is to increase the number of German tourists", Turkish Cypriot daily Haberdar (08.03.12) reports that the self-styled minister of tourism, environment and culture Unal Ustel is currently in Berlin, Germany, for the "ITB Berlin 2012 Tourism Fair", in which the occupation regime is taking part. The event, which is the biggest tourism fair worldwide, is organized between March 7-11.

Speaking during the Fair, Ustel stated that they aim to increase the charter flights conducted from Germany to the occupied area, from three flights per week, to five-six times per week. Stating that they are holding contacts in Germany with tour operators for this reason, he added that the aim of those working in the tourism sector is to increase the number of German tourists who visit the occupied area by the end of the current year. He also stated that the development in tourism was very good last year, and added that their goal is to increase the number of tourists who visit the occupied area from various countries by 30%. He added that their goal is also to increase the number of tourists from Turkey up to 20%.

According to the paper, Ustel met in the framework of the Fair with the Turkish Minister of Tourism and Environment Ertugrul Gunay and they toured the stand with which the occupation regime is participating in the Fair. Speaking during the meeting, Gunay stated that he is one of the persons who worked the most for the promotion of the breakaway regime and added that the occupied area has a lot of potentials in the tourism field due to its geographical position and history.

[10] Erdogan rejected reports saying that he suffers from terminal cancer

Turkish daily Today's Zaman (07.03.12) reported that the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rebuffed a recently leaked email from the security analysis company Stratfor, which said he had terminal cancer and just two years to live, adding that no one but God can determine how much time he has left to live.

Erdogan said during a party meeting on Wednesday the following: "We are [members of] a party that believes in fate. We are a party that took risks to serve our people. This soul belongs to God. God is the only one who can take it back. We did not and do not surrender to threats. Only God can determine the length of our life. ? Those who believe in rumours and speculate on the lifespan of others, for us, are not only daring but insolent as well".

Erdogan also lashed out at the Taraf daily, which reported the email leak on its front page on Tuesday. "Those who carry these rumors in their headlines are also very insolent," he said. "Those who run these stories should know this well. You can neither take nor add a moment to a lifespan that has been determined by God. The plan belongs to Him and that plan will be in place," he concluded.

[11] USAK's study reveals that one out of three women in Turkey were physically or sexually abused

According to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (08.03.12), one out of three women in Turkey has been physically or sexually abused, but 92% of them have not reported this to authorities, according to a report revealed yesterday by the International Strategic Research Organization (USAK).

The report said even effective laws protecting women's rights have failed to fully stamp out abuse, pointing to the United States and European countries, and emphasized the importance of education.

"The Government's first goal is to pass laws, because it is the most visible form of action. While legal regulations are necessary, what matters is a mental transformation. Education, starting from preschool, must highlight equality between men and women," USAK's Dilek Karal said.

While women with all levels of education are subject to domestic abuse in Turkey, statistics reveal that cases of abuse decrease as the male's education level increases.

The risk of domestic abuse, however, doubles in households where women earn more than men, with two out of three women in this category admitting to being abused.

Women who are separated or divorced from their husbands are at a higher risk, with seven out of 10 revealing they were abused.

Official statistics indicate 92 % of these women have not reported cases of abuse, with barely half admitting it to family and friends. Only 4 % have filed complaints with authorities.

Murders of women in Turkey have increased 1,400%, from 66 in 2002 to almost 1,000 in 2011, the report said.

Turkey is the only country in the world where nearly five women die every day over their rights to live, work, marry and divorce, says a letter sent to Parliament by the End Violence Platform, representing 237 women's organizations.

USAK compiled the statistics cited in the report from the Directorate General on the Status of Women, the Ministry of Justice, the World Health Organization and the United Nations, as well as local independent studies.

[12] Koc, Sabanc1 and Turkcell, the most reputed brands in Turkey; Turkey's Economy Minister on Turkey's economy

Turkish daily Today's Zaman (07.03.12) reported that Koc and Sabanc1 Holdings as well as the GSM operator Turkcell were announced on Wednesday as Turkey's most reputed brands by 0tibar At?lyesi, a division of Ertan Acar Consulting, as part of its "Turkey Reputation Index" research conducted in 12 sectors and 26 provinces across the country.

Koc and Sabanc1 are both Turkey's most powerful families and run the country's largest corporations. The two groups are highly active in the fields of energy and finance as well as in various industrial sectors. Turkcell 0letisim Hizmetleri A.^., [Translator's note: Turkcel Communication Services] on the other hand, is Turkey's largest mobile phone operator and also has assets in a number of other countries, including Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The three brands were followed by food giant Ulker, durable consumer goods producer ArCelik and construction contractor Agaoglu in descending order.

The research, whose findings were announced on Wednesday, also showed that the most reputed sectors in Turkey are food, electronics and retail. In its sector-based analysis, the research also named the most reputed brands in the 12 sectors it studied. According to those results, whereas Ulker appears as the most reputed brand in the food sector, ArCelik clinched the title in electronics as did the hard discount chain B0M A.^. in retail.

(& ) Meanwhile, according to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (08.03.12), Turkey's Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said yesterday that Turkey's reputation has reached a desirable level over the last decade with its rapidly growing economy.

Speaking at the "Turkey Reputation Index 2011" meeting in Istanbul, Caglayan said: "Turkey's reputation was eroding nearly ten years ago." He said that Turkey's economy had developed to a significant extent, going from being a borrower country of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to an attractive market drawing foreign direct investments (FDI) from all around the world.

"Turkey was seeking $1 billion from the IMF in previous years to pay the salaries of its public employees," said Caglayan, suggesting that international companies' confidence in Turkey rose as the economy started to prove its stability in 2003.

The Minister added that the total FDI to Turkey amounted to nearly $15 billion between 1923 and 2003, while the value of FDI attracted by Turkey was $108 billion in just the last nine years. "This shows the increasing reputation of Turkey and of Turkish firms," he said. "We are now planning our next 12 years, making projections to ensure that we become among the top 10 economies of the world in 2023," said Caglayan, emphasizing that the country's export volume would also reach $500 billion the same year, the one hundredth anniversary of the Republic.

Speaking on the new incentive law, he said the Turkish Government aimed to support the private sector actors to make more investments and produce more through the incentives. TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION http://www.moi.gov.cy/pio
