[01] Babacan says that their aim is the strengthening of the TRNC with all its organizations and institutions; He met with Avci in Ankara

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (18.01.08) reports that the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Babacan and the self-styled minister of foreign affairs, Turgay Avci have said that 2008 is an important year for reaching a solution in Cyprus. Addressing a ceremony for distributing certificates to employees of the self-styled ministry of foreign affairs who participated in a training program at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara, Mr Babacan reiterated that they want the beginning of a new process regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem after the presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus. An important window of opportunity will be opened in 2008, he added.

Mr Babacan said also the following:

The place of the solution is the UN. The comprehensive solution will be based on the will and the consent of the two peoples. Turkey and the TRNC are determined to continue their policies focused on the solution. The Turkish side is ready for a new partnership within the established UN parameters in Cyprus based on the political equality, the bi-zonality and the equal status of the two founding states. Unfortunately, the fact that the Greek Cypriot side does not respond to the search of the Turkish Cypriot side for reconciliation impedes the UN procedure and reduces the hopes in the way for peace. I want to especially note with this occasion that our patience has a limit.

Mr Babacan said that their aim is the strengthening of the TRNC with all its organizations and institutions and pointed out that the TRNC, which the Turkish Cypriots have established based on their right to determine their fate, is the strongest guarantee of a viable solution.

In his address, Mr Avci alleged: As TRNC we undertook the necessary initiative in 2004 together with Turkey and said yes to the plan put forward by the world. Then now it is the EUs turn. The UN should make an opening and pave the way for new initiatives in 2008 for a comprehensive solution.

Meanwhile, Kibris reports also that according to a statement issued by the self-styled ministry of foreign affairs, Mr Avci and Mr Babacan held a face to face meeting after the ceremony. After the meeting they both participated in a working lunch and discussed with their delegations the results of president Guls visit to the USA and the common stance the Turkish side will follow at a new negotiations process. They also discussed how the Turkish Ministry of Foreign affairs will contribute to the projects for the restructuring of the self-styled ministry of foreign affairs.

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (18.01.08) reports that Oktay Kayalp, self-styled mayor of occupied Famagusta, has said that the draft report prepared by the European Parliament Petition Committee, which visited the island between 25 and 28 of November last year, is balanced and fair, in spite of the fact that it is incomplete. In a written statement issued yesterday, Mr Kayalp expressed his satisfaction because their views have been reflected in the report, even though they were not completely reflected.

He said that after the publication of the report they expect the chairman of the Committee, Polish member of the EP, Martin Libicki to exhibit the same leadership as he showed during their visit to the island when the Greek Cypriot asked him not to meet with Mr Kayalp.

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (18.01.08) reports that the self-styled mayor of the occupied part of Nicosia, Cemal Bulutoglulari met yesterday at his office with the ambassador of Norway to Athens, Sverre Stub, who is responsible for Cyprus. Mr Bulutoglulari briefed Mr Stub on the recent developments regarding the Cyprus problem and the projects of the municipality for 2008. He told him that the TRNC could not make its voice heard in the world because it is not recognized.

Mr Bulutoglulari said that his municipality wants to carry out joint projects in cultural and technical sense with foreign municipalities and asked Mr Stub for his help on this issue.

The Norwegian ambassador expressed his satisfaction from visiting the occupied part of Cyprus for the first time and noted that he was happy to see the new building of the municipality of the occupied part of Nicosia.

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (18.01.08) reports that Hasan Ercakica, spokesman of the Turkish Cypriot leader Talat, issued a written statement on the problem caused by the illegal immigrants and said that the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus should cooperate with the TRNC officials and exchange information with them.

He claimed that if the authorities of the Republic conveyed to the occupation authorities the information they acquire from the illegal immigrants they arrest, the breakaway regime could take the necessary measures against the persons who help the illegal immigrants. [05] The DP withdraws from the assembly

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (18.01.08) reports that the MPs of the Democratic Party (DP) submitted yesterday their resignation to the speaker of the self-styled assembly, Mrs Fatma Ekenoglu. In the justification of their resignation, the MPs said that they refuse to be figurants of the political filthiness and the democracy only for the show. They also said that they will not accept the interferences made in the democratic institutions and their free will. In order for the resignation to be valid, it should be approved by the general assembly.

Furthermore, Turkish Milliyets (18.01.08) correspondent in occupied Cyprus, Sefa Karahasan, writes that the leader of the DP, Mr Serdar Denktas, who accused the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey of interfering in the TRNC politics and establishing the coalition government between the Republican Turkish Party and the Freedom and Reform Party, presented yesterday to the assembly the resignation of the six MPs of his party.

The paper writes that if the resignation of the DPs MPs is not accepted, the assembly will continue to function under its current form. In case the resignation is accepted, the government has two choices: Either to carry out by-election within a year or to call for early elections.
