[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Gul back from New York. Turkey resorts to every means to legalize its crimes against an EU member stateAnkara Anatolia news agency (29.09.04) reported from New York that the Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul completed his meetings in New York late on Tuesday with a news conference at the Turkish House. On his contacts Mr. Gul said: ''I came to the United States on September 12th to attend the United Nations General Assembly and had meetings with Presidents, Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of nearly 40 countries. I met leaders of UN, Arab League, the European Union (EU), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). I attended 6 multilateral meetings. I delivered a speech at UN General Assembly on September 23rd and explained the views of Turkey. I confirmed Turkey's candidacy for UN Security Council between 2009-2010 and asked for support.'' Recalling that he also met UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Gul Said: "We have discussed Iraq and Cyprus. I asked Annan to be Insistent for providing rights to Turkish Cypriots who voted yes in Referendum.'' Upon a question, Gul said: "In his report, Annan invited all UN members to establish economic relations with the Turkish Cypriots. I asked him to repeat this call. Thus, there is no legal obstacle in this sense. I told Annan that the report on Cyprus should not remain on the shelf and that he should be insistent about the issue.'' In reply to another question, Gul said: "The ministers of all Islamic countries took part in the OIC meeting. "TRNC" Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas delivered a speech in the meeting as the representative of TRNC. He explained recent developments about Cyprus and asked for the support of OIC. Many foreign ministers of OIC member countries said that their support about Cyprus issue will continue. They encouraged Turkish Cypriots and promised to increase relations with TRNC.'' Ankara Anatolia later on reported from Ankara that Mr. Abdullah Gul made statements upon his return to Turkey at Esenboga airport. On the EU-OIC planned forum Mr. Gul stated: ''TRNC's participation in the OIC-EU joint forum of foreign ministers (to be held in Istanbul on Oct. 4th and 5th) will not mean that EU recognizes TRNC." When reminded of problems within the EU stemming from Ankara's efforts to impose participation of its occupation regime in the OIC-EU joint forum, Gul said: "There may be some problems, but (organization of) this meeting was requested by ministers of EU. They said that Turkey should host this meeting. Many countries of the OIC also adopted a similar attitude. So, preparations of the meeting are going on.'' He added that he hoped the meeting will be a fruitful one. Alleging that Turkey's puppet regime was attending the meeting as an observer member of OIC, Gul said: "OIC accepted the "TRNC" under the name it was mentioned in the Annan plan, to show its support to the plan. Thus, this does not concern the EU. It does not mean that EU recognizes the "TRNC" either. Also, OIC members don't recognize 'TRNC' YET, but it has a status of observer.'' Gul alleged that the meeting did not have a political aim, stating that it was masterminded to support peace and to eliminate discrepancies. [02] Mainland Cumhuriyet reports that Turkey will not yield an inch on the occupation regime's participation in OIC-EU forumUnder the title "The EU and the 'TRNC' challenge each other", mainland Cumhuriyet newspaper (30.09.04) publishes a report by Ayhan Simsek from Ankara on the planned for 4-5 October joint EU-OIC forum in Istanbul.Invoking information, Mr. Simsek writes that the issue of the participation of the "Turkish Cypriot State" was first raised by the current EU president, Dutch Foreign Minister Mr. Bernard Bot, on 21 September with Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdullah Gul, stating that for the EU participation in the forum a compromise was necessary, but Gul made no step back. Mr. Simsek then refers to the discussions within the EU and the French compromise proposal for a press statement before the forum that the EU does not recognize any "Turkish Cypriot State". This proposal was rejected by Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, which asked for the change of the name under which the Turkish Cypriots will participate. The issue was also discussed by COREPER yesterday in Brussels which decided to ask from Turkey for the last time a new formula, and if this is not accepted the forum to be postponed. The EU term president Holland is expected to take a new initiative to this end. Mr. Simsek concludes that the Turkish Foreign Minister stressed that the participation of the "Turkish Cypriot State" in the forum does not constitute recognition. On the other hand, local Cumhuriyet (30.09.04) gives wide coverage to Mr. Serdar Denktas's address of the General Assembly of the Islamic Conference Organisation in New York (OIC) and the Organization's final communiqu under the titles "Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Denktas addressed OIC general Assembly: The status of the Turkish Cypriot state cannot be degraded" and "Full support for the TRNC from OIC". In his speech Mr. Serdar Denktas said the demand not to use the name "Turkish Cypriot state" deals a blow not only to the authority and image of the OIC but also puts into doubt the decision on the "TRNC" taken by 50 independent states members of the OIC. "Mr. Denktas also demanded the participation of the 'TRNC' as full member of the OIC", writes the paper. Finally, local KIBRISLI (30.09.04) covers the issue in its front page leader under the title: "Who is the Traitor? Serdar Denktas has supported the 'Turkish Cypriot state' instead of the TRNC at the OIC meeting." The paper writes that Mr. Serdar Denktas could in the mildest of expressions be described as having a double face because at the OIC meeting he supported the "Turkish Cypriot State" name while at home he repeatedly branded traitors those who support this name within occupied Cyprus. [03] The Council of Turkish Cypriot Organisations of Britain is going to Brussels for the issue of the lifting of the "embargo" against the Turkish CypriotsTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (30.09.04) reports that the Council of Turkish Cypriot Organisations of Britain is going to Brussels in October for the issue of the alleged 'embargo' against the Turkish Cypriots. The Council has prepared a report according to which the 'embargo' placed in occupied Cyprus is unjust from the legal point of view. This report will be given to various deputies of the European Parliament. In addition this week the report will be given to deputies of the British parliament. [04] The USA ambassador to Turkey: "There are obstacles before the removal of isolations"Turkish daily MILLIYET newspaper (30/09/04) publishes an interview given to the paper's writer columnist Sami Kohen by the US ambassador to Turkey Eric Edelman. When asked about the removal of the so-called isolations allegedly imposed on the Turkish Cypriots, Ambassador Edelman said: "Turkey has done all it could do as regards the solution. It is justly protesting for the removal of the isolations in Cyprus. On this issue we are working together with Turkey. We are focusing on measures that will put an end to the isolations. In fact, there are some international legal obstacles. However, I am of the belief that they will be overcome". [05] The Justice and Peace Party to merge with the Democratic PartyTurkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (30.09.04) reports that the Justice and Peace Party of Ertugrul Hasipoglu decided to merge with the Democratic Party of Serdar Denktas. The two parties have been having talks for this issue for some time now and they have decided to merge after decisions taken by their authorised Committees. They will sign a protocol of cooperation after Serdar Denktas' return to occupied Cyprus. The Justice and Peace Party received 3,3% at the so-called parliament election that took place on the 14th of December 2003, and does not have any "seats" in the pseudoparliament. [06] Serdar Denktas is lobbying for the participation of the occupation regime in the Islamic Games in Saudi Arabia next AprilTurkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (30.09.04) reports that the so-called Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Serdar Denktas, who is in New York for the coordination annual meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference), met yesterday with the Pakistani Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Hursit Mehmet Kasuri.During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue. Serdar Denktas also stressed that the member countries of the OIC should continue their pressure against the international community, in order to bring to an end the "isolation" of the Turkish Cypriots. Serdar Denktas, who wants the support of the Pakistani Minister in order to obtain a participation of the Turkish Cypriot athletes to the Islamic Games to be, held next April in the town Cidde, in Saudi Arabia, said that this could be a major step for breaking the sport "embargo". Mr Kasuri promised that he would do whatever he can, so that the Turkish Cypriot athletes would be able to participate in the Islamic Games.
