    [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[04] Columnist in AFRIKA supports that the aim of the Annan Plan was to clear Turkey and not to unite Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (23.06.04) publishes the following article by Ali Osman under the title: "The fight against the division sought by imperialism",

"Nobody can say that the Annan Plan is on the table and can be brought back. Who is the Plan's father? Koffi Annan' 'From now on I closed the Cyprus problem', he said. Meanwhile he started to disperse the team which was set up for solving the Cyprus problem. Firstly De Soto was assigned duties in another place. Starting from this month De Soto will work in Western Sahara as the UN Secretary-General's special envoy to Western Sahara. The other authorised and influential name, the American diplomat Thomas Weston asked to be relieved from his duties.

Another powerful name was Powell. After a short period of time, he as well is getting ready to ask to be excused by the UN Secretary-General. What else, if not a sign that this job is finished, can the fact that the powerful names headed by Annan want to be discharged? The Annan plan is also finished. And the Cyprus problem entered another phase. But what about the dream of the Turkish Cypriots as regards the EU?

What was the aim of the Plan? To clear Turkey of responsibilities. Was it successful? Yet it was. Do the Turkish Cypriots have a share in this success? They have an essential share. How?

The powers behind the people who gathered in the squares saying 'EU, peace and solution', were Turkey, England and America. Those who prepared the plan were England and America. Everything was prepared in the framework of the Greater Middle Eastern project and was put in force. While doing this it was aimed to clear Turkey from its responsibilities and if necessary to make it the third state after England and Poland which is close to America inside the EU. There was another role tailored for Turkey. A pro-American leadership of the Muslim countries. The plan was put into force as desired. Turkey was cleared and its role assigned. The Turkish Cypriots had a big share in this as well. They saved Turkey but they were left in the abyss. They lost community rights, and they are hoping for help from someone who will come from Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone.

There is no Plan anymore and no Cyprus problem! Our road was until here. Those who were in the forefront are now preoccupied with making money. Annan, De Soto, Weston and Power paid the bill. They left and gave to the Turkish Cypriots as a present a leader!

On our part, we shall continue our struggle for a `United Cyprus against the partition sought by imperialism, while at the same time thinking about how to explain to our children the hope that faded.

They turned to the streets with the slogan of Europe but behind the door opened with the `yes there appeared AFRIKA."
