[01] Denktas: Britain and the USA do not want Turkish troops in Cyprus

According to the Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (29.08.03), the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas, who is currently in Istanbul ,Turkey for various contacts, has claimed that as long as the Treaty of Guaranty exists Cyprus^ entry into the EU without Turkey^s membership is out of question .He went on and added that the occupied area could enter into the EU only when the EU satisfies Turkey and Turkey tells the Turkish Cypriots that ^do not worry, nothing will change from the guarantee and I am ready to defend you^.

Denktas further alleged that Britain as guarantor power failed to protect the Turkish Cypriots for the last forty years and that he is in contact with lawyers in order to open a law suit against the British government. He claimed that the British parliament has no right to approve Cyprus^ accession to the EU.

Alleging that the USA and Britain want the opposition to win the so- called December elections in the pseudo-state because they do not want Turkish troops in Cyprus, Denktas added that these two want to use Cyprus for their own interest as military base against the Arab countries in the oil trade.

Speaking to private TV channel ^Sky Turk^ in Istanbul, Denktas claimed that in case the EU recognizes the two ^states^ in Cyprus then Cyprus could unite within the EU.

When asked what he will do if the news that in case the opposition wins the so-called elections they will remove him from the past of negotiator, Denktas replied that he will continue as ^president^ and will try to prevent possible dangers that might come up.

[02] No applications by Greek Cypriots to the occupation regime^s Compensations committee

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS (29.08.03) reports that it was made known that no Greek Cypriots have applied to the Committee set up by the occupation regime for compensations to the owners of immovable property, which is under the control of the Turkish army since the invasion of the island by Turkey in 1974.

According to the paper, many Greek Cypriots go to the Committee, but simply in order to get information.

The paper also reports that the Committee set up by the occupation regime for compensations to Turkish Cypriots for the properties they abandoned in the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus in 1974, will start receiving applications as of next Wednesday.

In addition to the above, the paper adds, the Vakif Foundation is continuing its work regarding its property both in the free areas of Cyprus and the fenced area of occupied Famagusta.

On the whole issue statements were made yesterday by the occupation regime^s so-called Attorney General, Mr Akin Sait.

In reply to a question regarding compensations to Turkish Cypriots, and especially who will get the compensation since the Turkish Cypriots have ceded their rights for their properties in the free areas to the pseudostate in order to be given Greek Cypriot property in the occupied areas, Mr Sait replied:

^Depending on the size of the compensation, payment will be made to individuals as well^.

The paper stresses that Mr Sait gave no further details on this issue for which the Turkish Cypriots are very anxious.

Finally, the paper writes that the work regarding the ^office^ for compensation to Turkish Cypriots will be followed by lawyers Zeki Bayram, Ergin Ulunay and Gursel Kadri, who are registered in the Republic of Cyprus.

Mr Erel made these statements in a meeting he had yesterday with a delegation of the so-called Turkish Cypriot Civil Servants Trade Union (KTAMS).

Mr Erel stated that he does not consider Mr Denktas to be a proper opponent for the elections. However, he said that if Mr Denktas considers this subject so important, he should resign from the so-called presidency, become the head of the right wing and start gathering the rightists.

On his part Mr Ali Seylani, the general secretary of KTAMS stated that the Parties and the Civil Society Organizations which support the solution and the European Union should act together for the ^elections^ and that KTAMS supports the efforts being made in this direction.

[05] Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visits the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan to relate problems of Greek minority

Under the above title Turkish Daily News (29.08.03) reports that the Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said that the problems of the Greek minority have both political and legal aspects, after visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Thursday in Ankara. The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew asks the Turkish government to reopen a key training centre for the Orthodox clergy.

"The Prime Minister told us that they will consider our problems with goodwill. We hope that certain concrete results will be reached in the near future," said Bartholomew speaking to the press.

The Halki Theological School, on Heybeliada Island of Istanbul, was closed in 1971 by Turkey. The Orthodox Church says that without the seminary, they are denied a centre for theological study and clerical training in what was the ancient Byzantine capital.

Bartholomew presented a letter to Erdogan that indicates the problems of the Greek Orthodox minority.
