[01] Ertugruloglu accused Iacovou of interfering in the pseudo-elections

Illegal Bayrak radio station (20.08.03) broadcast that the so-called Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence of the pseudostate, Mr Tahsin Ertugruloglu accused the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr George Iacovou, of interfering to the forthcoming December ^elections^ of the pseudostate.

Mr Iacovou, stated that representatives of almost all countries believe that those parties that supported Rauf Denktas would lose in December^s so-called elections.

Tahsin Ertugruloglu alleged that Mr Iacovous comments were ^a clear indication of the ongoing sinister games being played over the pseudostate by over the border foreign alliances^. ^This is direct interference in the general elections to be held in December^ he added. Mr Ertugruloglu also said that this was a sign that opposition circles within the pseudostate were continuing their ^obvious mission^, which is, as he alleged, ^a threat to the pseudostate and the Turkish Cypriots^.

^The opposition can claim to run the country better, but not to destroy the state in cooperation with the Greek Cypriots^ he claimed.

[02] Turkey's Cicek Discusses Cyprus problem with visiting US delegation

According to Ankara Anatolia (20.08.03), Turkish Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said on Wednesday that Iraqi issue should be evaluated by considering 57-year history of Turkish-U.S. relations. He said Turkey considered the developments in Iraq in this respect. Cicek said, ``Turkey is a friend of the United States, and this friendship should never be preferred to two tribe leaders.`` An apparent reference to Iraqi Kurdish leaders Mr Mesut Barzani and Celal Talabani.

Cicek met with U.S. delegation headed by Chairman of U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Richard Lugar, on Wednesday in Ankara.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Cicek said that they discussed Turkish-U.S. relations, Turkeys EU membership issue as well as Cyprus.

Regarding Cyprus Cicek said: ``Our attitude pertaining to Cyprus is definite. I told them that there were things which Turkey may give up or may not give up for the solution of the Cyprus question. I said Cyprus question could be solved in a short time during talks in case the things which Turkey can not give up are met.``

Cicek said such a high ranking visit from the United States brought Turkish-U.S. relations onto the agenda.

[03] Eroglu demands from Turkish Cypriot organizations to cooperate with the so-called Compensation Commission

According to Turkish Cypriot daily BIRLIK newspaper (21.08.03), the so-called Prime Minister of the pseudostate Dervis Eroglu in a circular sent to all so-called ^Ministries, ministerial offices, so-called semi governmental organizations, NGOs , municipalities and independent offices has demanded full cooperation with the so-called Immovable Property Evaluation Compensation Commission . In his circular Eroglu said that the Commission could demand written and oral information or call people for testimony. He said that those who refuse to cooperate with the Commission without valid reason shall be subject to ^legal persecution^.

BIRLIK reports that the so-called law aims at solving the property problems of the Greek Cypriots left in the occupied area. Those Greek Cypriots who do not apply to this Commission for either compensation or exchange, their property claim shall be taken up after the solution of the Cyprus problem.

[04] Military in Turkey stated that it is monitoring anti-secularists

Turkish NTV Television Station (20.08.03), broadcast that Turkey^s staunchly secular armed forces issued a warning against anyone taking part in anti-secular activities, saying that the military was monitoring any actions that threatened the situation.

General Hursit Tolon, the commander of the Aegean Army, said on Tuesday that those who believe that military is turning a blind eye to covert anti-secular activities were mistaken. ^Recently there have been some who have given intense support to or have protected these same (anti-secular) circles,^ he said, adding that the armed forces were closely watching these developments.

Earlier in the year, tension arose between the military and the pro-Islamist Justice and Development Party (JDP) government over the latter^s policies, seen by some as weakening the secular nature of the state. There is also a rift between the JDP administration and President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who vetoed some laws passed by the Turkish Parliament on the grounds that they have violated Turkey^s secular constitution.

[05] Nuri Cevikels statement on forthcoming elections in the occupied areas

According to Turkish Cypriot daily ORTAM newspaper (21.08.03), the so-called Refugee Association Chairman, Associated Prof., Nuri Cevikel in a statement yesterday declared that the so-called forthcoming elections in the occupied areas in December will be a ^turning point in the Turkish Cypriots^ history.^

The so-called Association is the organization of the Turks who are sent to the occupied area by Turkey after the Turkish invasion and occupation of part of Cyprus in 1974 for illegal settlement.

The occupation regime until now considered the settlers a voting basket for maintaining the status quo represented by Denktas. The illegal Turkish settlers now turned against Denktas and his supporters and decided to vote pro solution and EU forces in the forthcoming so-called elections with the hope that their presence will be ^legalized^ in case of a solution based on the Annan Plan.

Cevikel, without giving names, strongly criticized Denktas and his son Serdar for trying to establish a ^Sultanate^ in the occupied area through exploiting the settlers^ votes. He said that they will put an end to this situation in the so-called elections in December .

[06] The Patriotic Union Movement held a meeting with the KTOS Organization regarding the education rights of the Greek Cypriots at Karpass Peninsula

Turkish Cypriot daily YENI CIZGI newspaper (21.08.03), reports that a delegation from the Patriotic Unity Movement (PUM) held a meeting yesterday with the Turkish Cypriot Teachers Trade Union (KTOS) regarding the education rights of the Greek Cypriot enclaves of Karpass Peninsula.

Speaking during the meeting, the PUMs Foreign Relations Secretary, Mr Alpay Durduran, asked the support of KTOS for opening a secondary school for the Greek Cypriots who live in Karpass Peninsula. Stressing that the education issue of the Greek Cypriot enclaves is always a very important one Mr Durduran said that because of the lack of a secondary school in the region, the Greek families are left no choice but to go to the South. He also stressed that according to the Third Vienna Agreement the Greek Cypriots of Karpass Peninsula must have their own teachers and their own doctors and pointed out that this agreement must be applied.

In his part Mr Sener Elcil, the General Secretary of KTOS stated that the Organization supports the efforts made by the PUM for the education rights of the Greek Cypriot enclaves. He also said that education should not be prevented and stressed that this issue is open for political exploiting.

[07] Mehmet Ali Talat met with the Egyptian Ambassador in Nicosia

Turkish Cypriot daily YENI CIZGI newspaper (21.08.03) reports that the Egyptian Ambassador to Cyprus Mr Omar Metwally, whose duties in Cyprus will be ending next month, paid a farewell visit yesterday to Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, the chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP). Speaking during the meeting Mr Talat stated that the non -solution of the Cyprus problem will harm the Turkish Cypriots and stressed that he will continue to struggle towards the protection of the rights of the Turkish Cypriots and the solution of the Cyprus problem. Mr Talat also stated that finding a solution based on the Annan Plan is possible. He added that in case of a solution the Turkish Cypriots will acquire better financial and social conditions. Mr Talat also said that ^the Plan is still on the table^ and stressed that the choice is not between the Annan Plan and another Plan, but between the Annan Plan and the non solution.
