In a statement prior to the meeting, Talat said that this is the first time that an Egyptian envoy is visiting his party, adding that his party has always favoured good relations with Egypt, which is an influential country in the Middle East. Noting that at the meeting he will convey to the ambassador the views of the CTP on the Cyprus and EU issues, Talat said that Egypt/s support will also be sought on the issue of Turkish Cypriots rights and interests. He said: ``We shall continue to convey our views to circles that are connected with in a bid to safeguard the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriots''. Talat said that the process is developing speedily and that 2004, the year when a decision on membership in the EU will be reached, is approaching. He charged that the process so far has developed to the detriment of the Turkish Cypriots.

In reply to a question, the Egyptian ambassador said that he will continue his contacts with the political parties in the occupied area at intervals but they there is no planned visit for the near future.

Responding to a question during his weekly press conference, Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesman Huseyin Dirioz said that Lindh/s statement was ``in line with Turkey/s position'', and that Lindh/s statement should be welcomed if it was true.

Lindh who addressed the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Parliament (AFET) and responded to questions of parliamentarians about the Cyprus issue, said that the EU would make a mistake if it shows reaction.

Noting that the talks on Cyprus issue continue within the framework of the United Nations and the withdrawal of Rauf Denktash from the negotiation table was temporary, Lindh said, ``we should bring proposal. We should follow the developments and expect Turkey to keep its promises''.

Responding to a question about news which said that Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Faruk Logoglu had ``carried out secret diplomacy'' with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan/s Special Representative to Cyprus, Dirioz said, ``everything that is necessary for our national causes is done. If the important thing in the news is secret diplomacy, it should better remain secret.''

CUMHURIYET says that the meeting was held with a view to achieve that the sides return to the negotiation table.

The paper adds that during the meeting, Logoglu tabled certain conditions under which it would be possible to return to the negotiations table.

The deputy spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Huseyin Dirioz, when asked during the regular press conference yesterday to comment on the press reports regarding the secret meeting said: ``In the press it is mentioned as a secret meeting. As the name implies: It is secret diplomacy. It should remain secret''.
