    [01] Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot Party Representatives Meet in Buffer Zone Anatolia Agency (12:21 hours, 6/6/00) reports that the representatives of

    several Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political parties met on Tuesday in Ledra Palace in the buffer-zone.

    A written statement issued following the meeting said, ``the meeting took place in a positive atmosphere,'' adding that relations between the two communities have been discussed.

    Pointing out that such meeting targeted showing that the feeling of confidence between the two communities was strong, the statement said all parties thought that similar initiatives of the sides will increase rapprochement between the two communities, and will contribute to the solution of conflicts.

    The joint statement said the next meeting will take place on June 29. Serdar Denktash, the leader of the Democratic Party (DP); Mehmet Ali Talat, the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP); Ozel Ziya, of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP); and Izzet Izcan and Alpay Durduran of the Patriotic Unity Movement (YBH) joined the meeting.

    Illegal Bayrak Radio (10:30 hours, 6/6/00) adds that Rauf Denktash, grandson of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and son of the latter's son, Raif Denktash, attended the meeting together with his uncle, Serdar Denktash. On behalf of the Greek Cypriot side, Spyros Kyprianou, the leader of the Democratic Party (DIKO); Vassos Lyssarides, the leader of Social Democrats' Movement (KI.SOS); Panayiotis Dimitriou from Democratic Rally (DISY); Dimitris Hristofias, the General Secretary of Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL), and Eleni Mavros, a member of the AKEL; members from United Democrats (EDE); Michalis Papapetrou, Government Spokesman, and George Christofides, participated in the meeting.

    The meeting was presided by Dusan Rozbora, the Slovakian Ambassador to Cyprus.

    [02] Kassianides reportedly in good condition KIBRIS (7/6/00) reports that Yeorgios Kassianides, the Greek Cypriot soldier

    who was caught by the Turkish Cypriot so-called security forces, denied yesterday to be examined by a doctor of the UN Peacekeeping Forces. Kassianides refused to reply to any questions by the Turkish Cypriot journalists. He said that he does not have any complaint or problem. His ``custody'' continues.

    [03] Fire in occupied Karpasia All of today's daily Turkish Cypriot newspapers (7/6/00) refer to the fire

    that broke out in the occupied area of Karpasia.

    The fire burned an area of 1km2 in the coasts of the occupied villages of Lythrangomi, Vathylakas and Neta.

    [04] Euro MP Balfe defends Turkish positions According to KIBRIS (7.6.00) British Europarliamentarian from the Labour

    Party, Richard Balfe, who is having contacts in the occupied area, has claimed that "The only solution is to listen to the Turkish side" and that "A solution cannot be reached if they are talking about occupation." Balfe has proposed that more Europarliamentarians must visit the occupied area and said that the Turkish Cypriot community on the island is asking for security.

    [05] Journalists assaulted All of today/s newspapers (7.6.00) report on the incident that took place

    yesterday at the building of the Turkish Cypriot newspaper KIBRISLI. The incident is reported in various versions.

    Anatolia Agency journalist Zuleyha Karaman Sagiroglu, who is four and a half months pregnant, and her husband Mustafa, who is a photographer, prepared several invoices and went to client newspapers.

    First, they went to Halkin Sesi and then to KIBRISLI. At the building of KIBRISLI newspaper, editor in chief Dogan Harmon refused to pay the invoices, a quarell subsequently burst out and, always according to the articles in the newspapers, Zuleyha said that with no respect to her condition (pregnacy) she was pushed and assaulted. The same happened to her husband.

    The KIBRISLI journalists claim that they did not push or assault the couple. KIBRISLI journalists Dogan Harmon, Hasan Altaylizode and Kartal Harmon were led to a "police" station and the couple to the hospital for medical treatment.

    [06] "Miss Globe" contest in occupied Kyrenia According to KIBRIS (7.6.00), the "Miss Globe International" beauty contest

    that has been held for the last 13 years in Turkey, this year will be held in the occupied area on 10 June.

    Contestants from 30 countries have begun arriving in the occupied area. The article gives emphasis to the participation of the Greek beauty Katerina Deli, who arrived yesterday accompanied by the Greek beauty contest jury member.

    The countries that will participate in the contest are: Turkey, "TRNC", USA, Brazil, Finland, Esthonia, Kazakistan, Moldavia, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Jamaika, Chezch Republic, Albania, France, Guatemala, Venezuela, Letonia, FYROM, Greece, Latvia, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Kosta Rica.
