    [01] Denktash says `confederation/ only solution

    Anatolia Agency (13:21 hours, 26.4.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Wednesday that confederation between ``two states'' is the only solution.

    Denktash spoke at the conference titled ``Turkey/s Role in World Policy in 21st Century'' at the ``Eastern Mediterranean University (DAU)''.

    Denktash, during his speech claimed: ``The reality is that there are two states, two separate people and two separate democracies in Cyprus. The solution must depend on this reality''.

    Speaking about Cyprus/ importance for Turkey, Denktash said Turkey, because of its strategic interests, ``will not level the island to its enemies and Hellenism. Therefore, in the 21st century, Cyprus will be important for Turkey as much as it was in the past'', he emphasized.

    [02] EU Ambassador meets Talat

    KIBRIS (27.4.00) reports that the Head of the EU delegation in Cyprus, Ambassador Donato Chiarini, who is having contacts in the occupied area, had a meeting yesterday with the leader of Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Mehmet Ali Talat.

    During the meeting, they exchanged views on the so-called presidential elections, the Cyprus problem, and the third round of the indirect talks to be held on 23 May in New York.

    [03] Hasipoglu to Jordan for Interparliamentary Union meeting

    According to KIBRIS (27.4.00), so-called assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu, who went to Turkey for the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, said that he held various useful contacts there with Turkish politicians as well as with Foreign MP/s.

    In addition Hasipoglu announced that next Saturday (24.4.00) he will fly to Annan, Jordan, at the head of a ``delegation'', to participate in the Interparliamentary Union meeting.

    [04] Echinococcus

    According to HURRIYET KIBRIS (26.4.00) the level of echinococcus is ever increasing in the occupied area and has reached that of South America where echinococcus is very high.

    A group of researchers carried out a research in the occupied area and published their findings in the ``Turkish Cypriot Doctors Magazine''.

    According to their findings the disease is spreading very quickly. The report includes the reasons why echinococcus is so spread out in the occupied area.The main reason is the uncontrolled slaughtering of livestock in make-shift places.

    HURRIYET KIBRIS (27.4.00) reports that according to an announcement of the so-called agricultural and forestry ministry a common project with UNOPS will be promoted in order to eradicate echinococcus.

    [05] Industrial Business Associations Summit in occupied area

    According to KIBRIS (27.4.00) the 4th Industrialists and Businessmen Associations of Turkey (SIAD) will be held tomorrow in occupied Kyrenia.

    The Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Businessmen Association Salih Celiker said, ``we want very much to overpass our domestical problems and have on opening to the outside world. It is really important for us to have contacts and trade with the outside world.''
