[01] ``EMU'' students full members of European student organization

According to KIBRIS (2.2.00) a group of ``East Mediterranean University (EMU)'' students have become full members of one of the biggest student organizations in Europe, the AEGEE (European Students General Forum).

Following this development, the six members of the AEGEE-Famagusta group will attend conferences and seminars that will be held in London, Istanbul and Smyrni during February.

[02] Turkish parliamentary committee to visit occupied area

KIBRIS (2.2.00) reports that members of Turkey/s Grand National Assembly/s Planning and Budget Committee will be visiting the occupied area between 3- 7 as guests of the so-called TRNC assembly.

During their stay, the committee members will have contacts with ``government and state officials'' and carry out investigations.

The committee, which consists of 26 Turkish MPs and an officer of the Turkish assembly, is headed by the committee chairman, Metin Sahin. (DP)

[03] ``Basketball Federation'' officials held contacts in Turkey

VATAN (2.2.00) reports that the so-called chairman of the ``TRNC Basketball Federation'' Halil Okunc and so-called general secretary Okan Donangil were in Istanbul between 27-29 January, where they met with the Chairman of Turkey/s Basketball Federation, Turgay Demirel, and the responsible for FIBA Affairs, Emir Turan.

As a result of the meetings, it was decided that a camp be organized for their corresponding ``national children and youth teams'' and that the ``TRNC Basketball Federation'' will be invited at an international organization event which will be held in Turkey.

It was also decided that a new ``protocol'' will be signed between Turkey and the pseudostate.

[04] Denktash repeats claim for sovereignty

KIBRIS and HALKIN SESI (2.2.00) report about the ongoing proximity talks in Geneva. The papers report about Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash/s statements prior to yesterday/s meeting with UN Secretary General/s Special Advisor for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto.

Asked to comment on President Clerides/ statement to AP that apart from four core points he was unaware that there are other points on the negotiation table, Denktash said: ``It is not my mistake that Clerides does not know there are other core issues other than the four core issues on the negotiation table''.

Denktash went on and said that ``unless Turkish Cypriot/s sovereignty and rights are accepted and recognized I will discuss neither territory nor borders nor any other map during the proximity talks''.

When asked to comment on President Clerides/ statement that the Turkish side/s insistence on the occupied area/s recognition is precluding the settlement Denktash said: ``This statement by Clerides demonstrates that he does not intend to settle the problem. Clerides is denying bizonality and refuses to accept the exchange of property which is supported by the Security Council. He is encouraging the return of all displaced persons. All these demonstrate that he does not intend to settle the problem''.

Denktash further warned that foreign intervention will negatively effect the process. He claimed that ``such intervention encourages the Greek Cypriot side''. He wanted the issue to be handled by the UN Security General.

Denktash stressed that they are debating the ``confederation''. (MY)
